Hurricane, Utah
Exotic pet aftercare in Hurricane: the local picture
Red rock, the Hurricane Cliffs and the blue water of Sand Hollow and Quail Creek reservoirs shape much of the outdoor life here. State parks and federal lands set their own policies on scattering, so check before leaving ashes anywhere. Plenty of families in town keep most of the remains at home and carry a spoonful to a favorite overlook once they have the land manager's blessing.
Hurricane sits in Washington County in Utah's far southwest, about 20 miles east of St. George and a short drive from the entrance to Zion National Park. It has grown fast, with new subdivisions and many retirees alongside long-time families. Most clinics and aftercare services are based in the St. George area, so ask your vet which provider they use and whether it collects from homes in Hurricane.
Around Hurricane, the nearest practice may be a mixed or farm vet more used to calves and horses than to gliders. Don't let that put you off. A farm vet can confirm death, store a body and often knows a provider that takes larger animals, which is exactly what you need for a wallaby, a big skunk or a kinkajou. For a tiny exotic, they can simply hold your pet in the clinic freezer until you've chosen.
Hurricane is home to about 25,745 people, the 40th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Washington (7 miles), St. George (13 miles, a larger centre) and Cedar City (40 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Hurricane routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
46.1%[1]
The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Merck Veterinary Manual and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Utah thinks about cremation
People in Utah mostly bury their dead (only about 46.1%[1] are cremated), and neighbors may be surprised that anyone would cremate a hedgehog or a spider. Their surprise isn't your problem. Keeping an unusual animal well took knowledge and daily care, and cremation is simply a practical way to keep them with you. A provider who treats your request as normal is the one to use.
The Utah figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What the Hurricane seasons mean for exotic pets and aftercare
Axolotls and many amphibians suffer when water warms, and a Hurricane summer can push an indoor tank well above what an axolotl tolerates. If one dies in the heat, remove it promptly, bag it without tank water and refrigerate or freeze. Don't pour the water outside or down a drain until you've spoken to your vet about disease.
Many Hurricane keepers run enclosures with heat lamps, mats and misting, and summer highs near 100°F put extra strain on all of it. After a loss, check the rest of the room: temperatures, humidity and equipment. If more than one animal is unwell, call the vet before you do anything with the body, because they may want to examine it.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Hurricane
Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. Hurricane providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.

Rules and paperwork in Utah
If you rent in Utah, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Hurricane.
Start with the Utah rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Hurricane's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
The first day, step by step
- Choose the provider before the appointment. Check two things: that they accept your species, and that your vet can pass your pet to them straight afterwards.
- Ask the vet how it works for a small exotic. Many sedate first with gas or an injection, because veins are tiny; knowing this in advance makes the day less frightening.
- Decide whether you'll stay. Plenty of keepers choose to. Take along the hide, nest box or pouch they usually sleep in, so they feel at home.
- Say what you'd like kept: some quills, a snip of fur or, if the feet are large enough to leave one, a paw print.
- Write clear instructions on the release form: the species, individual cremation, and that the remains come back to you.
- Ask for an itemized receipt, one from the provider and one from the vet.
- Plan something gentle for afterwards. Coming home to an empty enclosure is hard. Some people clean it out the same evening; others can't face it for a few days.
Keeping a small, special pet close
Summer here is true desert heat, with July highs around 100 degrees and nights that barely cool off. A body deteriorates quickly in those conditions, so act within hours: move your pet into air conditioning, rest it on a towel over tile or concrete, and call your vet or provider right away. Winter is gentler, with only a handful of freezing nights, though prompt arrangements still matter.

Questions people ask
How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[1]. We show it on the Hurricane page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Hurricane?
January and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 100°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hurricane?
Usually yes. Washington is about 7 miles away, St. George is about 13 miles away and Cedar City is about 40 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much ash will my axolotl or frog leave?
Very little. Amphibians are mostly water and have light skeletons, so a large axolotl may leave a gram or two and a small frog possibly nothing visible. Many keepers still choose individual cremation because it means their animal was treated alone and with care. Ask the provider in advance so you know what to expect.
Can I freeze-dry or preserve my pet instead of cremating?
Yes, but decide before cremation, because it needs the whole body. Freeze promptly in a sealed bag. Freeze-dry studios often take months and cost far more than cremation; one US studio charges about USD 650[7] for a pet under 1 lb. Ask for photos of the same species they've done, and whether they accept pets by courier.
Will a pet crematory in Hurricane cremate a hedgehog or sugar glider?
Most will, but not all have done it before. When you call, give the exact species and weight, and ask whether they cremate small animals individually, whether they use a tray to collect fine remains and how much ash they expect to return. A hedgehog usually leaves a tablespoon or two; a glider leaves a few grams.
