Rowlett, Texas
Getting help with an unusual pet around Rowlett
August in Rowlett peaks around 97F, and the lake adds a muggy edge that makes afternoons heavier. When a death comes on a hot day, get the body into air conditioning promptly, rest it on a towel over tile, and pack sealed ice bags beside it. January lows near 38F buy a little time, but arrangements are still best made before bedtime.
Rowlett spreads along the western shoreline of Lake Ray Hubbard, about five miles from Garland, where I-30 and the George Bush Turnpike cross the water on long causeways. DART's Blue Line ends at the station in Rowlett's old downtown. Streets wind around coves and cul-de-sacs, and most homes have a garage, so tell the provider if your house sits on a narrow lakeside lane or inside a gated section.
In a smaller place like Rowlett, the local vet may never have arranged cremation for a hedgehog or an axolotl, and the regional crematory they use may be an hour or more away, often somewhere around Garland. That doesn't mean it can't be done. It means you should give the species and weight up front, and expect the ashes, if any, to take a little longer to come back.
Rowlett is home to about 67,890 people, the 58th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Garland, roughly 5 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Rowlett run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Sachse (4 miles), Garland (5 miles, a larger centre) and Rockwall (5 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Texas thinks about cremation
In Texas, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated. That places it in the middle: plenty of crematories, but not all of them used to unusual requests. Exotics vets are the best bridge, because they deal with local providers regularly and know which ones have handled small mammals, amphibians or invertebrates carefully.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Rowlett only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What the Rowlett seasons mean for exotic pets and aftercare
Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across Rowlett in August, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.
Flies and ants find a body quickly in hot weather, especially in a reptile room or a screened porch. During June, July, August and September, don't leave your pet in the enclosure while you make calls: move them straight into a sealed bag and then the fridge or freezer. For invertebrates such as tarantulas, check the enclosure for mites or other pests before it's used for another animal.

Prices for small and large exotics in Rowlett
Published industry ranges are wide: one US insurer lists private cremation from $100 to more than $500 and aquamation from about $80 to $450[5]. Where a Rowlett quote lands in that spread depends mostly on collection and extras, not on your pet's few ounces. Large exotics such as wallabies and emus are the exception; they're priced like big dogs, and some providers add a handling fee.
We keep the detailed Texas price table on one page so it stays current: see Texas prices.

Before you bury or cremate: Texas rules worth knowing
Invasive-species laws are written for living animals, but the reasoning applies after a death too. Anything from an enclosure that could carry a non-native parasite, fungus or seed, such as substrate, tank water or live plants, shouldn't be dumped outdoors. Bag it for household waste, or ask your vet. The notes for Texas below cover burial and scattering of your pet itself.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Rowlett.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Rowlett's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do next, in order
- Take a breath. A small exotic in a sealed bag in the freezer is safe for weeks. Nothing has to be decided tonight.
- Keep anything you'd like to hold on to now: a shed molt, a few quills, a tuft of fur, a feather or a photo of them in their enclosure.
- Think about preservation first. Taxidermy, resin and freeze-drying each need the body intact, and once cremation has happened that door is closed.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your vet, or just send us your pet's details instead and we'll find out who accepts your species.
- Choose individual or communal, knowing that very small animals may return little or no ash.
- Decide where the remains will go: a keepsake urn, a planter, a pendant or a small burial where it's allowed.
Memorials that suit an unusual companion
The lake shapes daily life in Rowlett, from shoreline parks to backyards that open onto the water, and plenty of owners picture ashes drifting there. Lake Ray Hubbard's parks and access points fall under rules set by the city and the lake's owner, the City of Dallas, so ask before scattering. Keeping the ashes indoors for now loses nothing. A decision can come later.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rowlett follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Garland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Garland (roughly 5 miles from Rowlett) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Rowlett climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Rowlett?
The closest communities we cover are Sachse (about 4 miles), Garland (about 5 miles) and Rockwall (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Rowlett too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Should I choose a provider in Rowlett or one further away?
Choose the one that's confident with your species. For small exotics, distance matters little: frozen or chilled in a cool box, your pet can travel an hour without any problem. A provider who has cremated hedgehogs or axolotls before, and tells you honestly what will return, is worth a drive.
What if a crematory in Rowlett refuses my species?
It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Houston. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.
