Horizon City, Texas
Exotic pet aftercare in Horizon City: the local picture
Horizon City is a fast-growing town on the desert mesa about 18 miles southeast of downtown El Paso, with newer homes on sandy lots and long views toward the mountains. Many residents commute into El Paso or to Fort Bliss. Aftercare providers based in El Paso serve the area, and a pickup from one of the newer subdivisions is usually quick once they have your address.
Horizon City's hottest month is June, when highs reach about 97F, and the dry air can make a closed garage or car dangerously hot within minutes. After a pet dies, get the body into air conditioning and onto a towel, and set a few sealed bags of ice in cloth beside it. December nights drop to the mid-30s, so in winter an unheated room will usually do until pickup.
In a smaller place like Horizon City, the local vet may never have arranged cremation for a hedgehog or an axolotl, and the regional crematory they use may be an hour or more away, often somewhere around El Paso. That doesn't mean it can't be done. It means you should give the species and weight up front, and expect the ashes, if any, to take a little longer to come back.
Horizon City's population is around 25,118, the 129th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. El Paso, roughly 18 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Horizon City run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Socorro (5 miles), El Paso (18 miles, a larger centre) and Sunland Park (26 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Horizon City too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
Cremation has grown steadily in Texas, where about 55.7%[1] of people now choose it, and newer pet providers have opened as demand rose. Smaller, newer operations can be more flexible about unusual species, offering a small-animal tray or an evening drop-off, while long-established ones may simply have seen more. Ask both how many animals under a pound they cremate in a typical month.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Horizon City, not as a count of pets.
Timing exotic pet aftercare in Horizon City's climate
Many Horizon City keepers run enclosures with heat lamps, mats and misting, and summer highs near 97°F put extra strain on all of it. After a loss, check the rest of the room: temperatures, humidity and equipment. If more than one animal is unwell, call the vet before you do anything with the body, because they may want to examine it.
Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across Horizon City in June, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Horizon City
Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[2], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing Horizon City quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.

Rules and paperwork in Texas
Cremating an exotic pet is rarely regulated on its own, but a few things around it can be. If your species needed a permit while alive, the permit may ask you to report the death. Protected species listed under CITES, the treaty on trade in endangered animals, may need their records kept. Burial and scattering follow local rules. Here's what applies in Texas.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Horizon City's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A practical checklist for Horizon City keepers
- Move your pet out of the enclosure into a clean, sealed bag. Leave heating and lighting running for any tank-mates.
- Label the bag with your name, today's date, the weight and the species.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, tell the vet before arranging cremation. Testing may be needed first.
- Store the body: fridge for a necropsy within a day or two, freezer for anything longer.
- Check your paperwork if the species needed a permit or CITES records, and whether you need to report the death.
- Book the cremation once you've found a provider who's confident with the species, and ask for a certificate naming it.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
The open Chihuahuan Desert around Horizon City, with its creosote flats and big sunsets, is where many households enjoyed quiet evenings outside with their animals. For a desert scattering, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; public and state land have their own rules. Spring winds can be fierce here, so pick a calm morning and stand with the wind at your back.

Questions people ask
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Horizon City page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Horizon City climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In June, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will I have to travel to El Paso to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in El Paso (roughly 18 miles from Horizon City) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Horizon City?
The closest communities we cover are Socorro (about 5 miles), El Paso (about 18 miles) and Sunland Park (about 26 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Horizon City too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can someone collect my wallaby or other large exotic in Horizon City?
Some providers can, especially those that also handle large dogs or farm animals. Give the weight and the full length, including tail, so they can send enough people and check their chamber fits. If they can't collect, you may need to deliver by car or trailer. Ask about mileage if the provider is based near El Paso.
Is exotic pet cremation common in Texas?
For people, about 55.7%[1] of deaths in Texas end in cremation, which means crematories are familiar and generally easy to find. Exotic pets are a small share of any crematory's work, though, so experience with your species still varies provider by provider. Asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
