Groves, Texas
Who handles exotic species near Groves, and how to reach them
Many Groves families have lived in the area for generations, and a cat or rabbit may be shared by three generations living a few blocks apart. Cremation is a frequent choice because storms and high water make a yard grave uncertain, and because remains can move with a family that relocates. Owners often keep the collar and tag beside a small sealed container that is easy to protect.
Groves is a small Jefferson County city on the Port Arthur side of the Golden Triangle, close to Sabine Lake and the refineries that anchor the local economy. The town is mostly ranch-style houses on quiet, tree-lined streets with modest yards. Providers who serve Groves are usually based in Port Arthur, Beaumont or elsewhere in the region, so ask whether a home collection costs extra.
If no provider near Groves will take your species, you still have choices. Some crematories in a larger centre such as Groves accept pets delivered by the owner, and a few accept small exotics by arrangement from another region. Communal cremation, home burial where it's safe and allowed, or preservation are all respectful alternatives if individual cremation isn't practical.
Groves's population is around 16,907, the 167th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Port Neches (4 miles), Port Arthur (4 miles, a larger centre) and Nederland (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Groves routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
In Texas, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated. That places it in the middle: plenty of crematories, but not all of them used to unusual requests. Exotics vets are the best bridge, because they deal with local providers regularly and know which ones have handled small mammals, amphibians or invertebrates carefully.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Groves rather than as pet data.
What the Groves seasons mean for exotic pets and aftercare
Axolotls and many amphibians suffer when water warms, and a Groves summer can push an indoor tank well above what an axolotl tolerates. If one dies in the heat, remove it promptly, bag it without tank water and refrigerate or freeze. Don't pour the water outside or down a drain until you've spoken to your vet about disease.
Many Groves keepers run enclosures with heat lamps, mats and misting, and summer highs near 93°F put extra strain on all of it. After a loss, check the rest of the room: temperatures, humidity and equipment. If more than one animal is unwell, call the vet before you do anything with the body, because they may want to examine it.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Groves
Published industry ranges are wide: one US insurer lists private cremation from $100 to more than $500 and aquamation from about $80 to $450[5]. Where a Groves quote lands in that spread depends mostly on collection and extras, not on your pet's few ounces. Large exotics such as wallabies and emus are the exception; they're priced like big dogs, and some providers add a handling fee.

Before you bury or cremate: Texas rules worth knowing
Never flush a dead axolotl, frog, fish or invertebrate, and never empty its tank water into a garden, pond or storm drain. Amphibian chytrid fungus and other diseases spread this way, and released animals, even dead ones, can carry invasive organisms. Beyond that common-sense rule, here is what Texas says about burial and scattering.

The first day, step by step
- Note what happened. Jot down when it was, what the enclosure readings were and anything you'd noticed, in case you later want a vet's opinion or a necropsy.
- Chill your pet in a sealed, labelled bag inside the first hour or two, and faster than that if it's hot.
- Choose your path: cremation on its own, a necropsy followed by cremation, preservation, or a burial if it's both legal and safe there.
- Find a provider who says yes clearly. Not sure what to ask? Try these questions to ask an exotic pet cremation provider.
- Check the container size. Most standard pet urns are far too big for a glider or hedgehog; a keepsake urn usually fits.
- Collect or receive the remains, then read the certificate and label to be sure the species is correct.
Ways to remember them that fit the species
Groves sits on flat, low coastal ground where a heavy storm can flood streets quickly, and hurricanes such as Rita and Ike have done serious damage here. Summers are long and steamy, with August highs in the low 90s. A tiled bathroom or laundry room stays coolest if a pet dies in that season, and it is wise to phone for collection without waiting for morning.

Questions people ask
Does the Groves climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Groves?
Usually yes. Port Neches is about 4 miles away, Port Arthur is about 4 miles away and Nederland is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Groves page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Do I have to report my exotic pet's death in Texas?
For most unregulated species, like hedgehogs or sugar gliders where they're legal, no. If you kept your pet under a state or local permit, or it's a protected species with registration papers, the permit conditions may require you to report the death or return documents. Read your permit or call the issuing wildlife agency.
Can someone collect my wallaby or other large exotic in Groves?
Some providers can, especially those that also handle large dogs or farm animals. Give the weight and the full length, including tail, so they can send enough people and check their chamber fits. If they can't collect, you may need to deliver by car or trailer. Ask about mileage if the provider is based near Groves.
How much ash will my axolotl or frog leave?
Very little. Amphibians are mostly water and have light skeletons, so a large axolotl may leave a gram or two and a small frog possibly nothing visible. Many keepers still choose individual cremation because it means their animal was treated alone and with care. Ask the provider in advance so you know what to expect.
