Georgetown, Texas
Finding a provider for an unusual pet in Georgetown
Georgetown sits where the Blackland Prairie meets the Texas Hill Country, and summers are fierce, with August afternoons averaging around 98°F. Cooling a pet's body quickly is important in those months: an air-conditioned room, a towel beneath, a sheet on top. January lows around 42°F are mild, but a hard freeze now and then can still ice the roads and delay a collection.
Georgetown, the Williamson County seat, has grown rapidly along Interstate 35 about 25 miles north of Austin. Its housing ranges from Victorian homes near the courthouse square to large new subdivisions and one of the country's biggest active-adult communities. For retirees and young families alike, cremation is the most common choice. Providers from Round Rock and Austin serve Georgetown, so ask what pickup costs.
Some keepers in Georgetown use their regular dog-and-cat vet for aftercare even though a specialist treated the animal. That's fine; any vet can hold a body and arrange cremation. Just make sure they know the species and weight, and ask them to note 'individual cremation, return any remains' on the paperwork so a very small body isn't treated as a communal case by default.
About 106,907 people live in Georgetown, which makes it the 41st-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Austin, about 25 miles (41 km) away, which is where some providers serving Georgetown are based.
Georgetown sits within easy reach of Round Rock (9 miles), Hutto (10 miles) and Leander (11 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Georgetown; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Merck Veterinary Manual and Embrace Pet Insurance.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Texas, at about 55.7%[1], but burial still has deep roots. Both are open to exotic keepers too. For a hedgehog or glider, burial in the garden can be simple where rules allow; for amphibians and aquatic pets, cremation avoids any risk of disease reaching wild animals through water.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Georgetown tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Georgetown weather, enclosures and timing
Flies and ants find a body quickly in hot weather, especially in a reptile room or a screened porch. During May, June, July, August and September, don't leave your pet in the enclosure while you make calls: move them straight into a sealed bag and then the fridge or freezer. For invertebrates such as tarantulas, check the enclosure for mites or other pests before it's used for another animal.
Hot months (May, June, July, August and September) are also when enclosure failures do their damage. A power cut, a failed thermostat or an air-conditioner breakdown can overheat a room of gliders, hedgehogs or amphibians in hours. If you lose an animal this way, tell the vet: it helps them decide whether a necropsy is useful, and it helps you protect the animals you still have.

Budgeting for an exotic pet's cremation in Georgetown
Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. Georgetown providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.
The Texas price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Permits, protected species and burial in Texas
Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in Texas. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Georgetown's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A practical checklist for Georgetown keepers
- Check that they've really died. Some exotics look lifeless when they aren't: a cold hedgehog attempting hibernation or a tarantula lying on its back to molt. If you're unsure, warm gently and call an exotics vet.
- Decide what you want first: a necropsy (post-mortem), preservation or cremation only. This decides how you store the body.
- Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Write the species, weight and date. Amphibians go in without tank water.
- Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation; if it's cremation only, either works. When a necropsy matters, try to get to the vet inside a day or two.
- Gather paperwork: breeder or purchase record, plus any permit or CITES certificate.
- Call a provider with the species and weight, then ask two things: have they cremated one before, and what exactly comes back to you.
- Get the price in writing, and make sure the total covers the certificate, the container and any pickup.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
Many Georgetown residents are retirees who have shared their later years with a devoted companion, and losing that animal can feel especially hard when a spouse or friends have also passed. Aftercare decisions may need to be made alone. Give yourself a few hours, call an adult child or a neighbor, and ask a provider to explain options slowly before choosing.

If you live between Georgetown and Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and El Paso, either page applies. Every other community in Texas, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Georgetown?
Usually yes. Round Rock is about 9 miles away, Hutto is about 10 miles away and Leander is about 11 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Georgetown climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 98°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Where are the providers that serve Georgetown actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Austin, about 25 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Georgetown and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Georgetown page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is communal cremation a bad choice for a very small pet?
Not at all. Communal cremation is handled with care; the difference is that no ashes come back. For a tarantula, a small frog or anything where little or nothing would return anyway, many keepers find communal cremation the more honest choice and spend the difference on a memorial they can keep.
Can I take my exotic pet's body across state lines for cremation?
For common species like hedgehogs or gliders, driving to a crematory in a neighbouring state is usually fine. For regulated animals, such as primates or anything held under a state permit, check with the wildlife agencies in both states first. Keep the body sealed and cool, and carry your paperwork.
