Arranging exotic pet aftercare in Amarillo

Amarillo, Texas

Exotic pet aftercare in Amarillo: the local picture

Amarillo spreads across the flat High Plains of the Texas Panhandle, with older brick neighborhoods near Wolflin and the medical district, newer subdivisions to the south and west, and ranchettes on the edges of town. Distances in the Panhandle are big, and Lubbock, the nearest large city, is about two hours south. Say which part of town or which county you're in, so we can shortlist providers who collect from home.

Many Amarillo families grew up burying pets in the backyard or out on family land, and that's still common on larger lots. The hard, dry caliche soil under much of the Panhandle can make digging tough, though, and renters and people on small lots often can't. Choosing a private cremation, with the ashes brought back to you, lets you keep your pet close and decide later whether to bury the ashes at home or out on the ranch.

Amarillo is big enough to have a pet crematory or two, but probably not one that advertises exotic species. In practice, most local keepers find their provider through the vet who treated their animal. If that vet sees exotics regularly, they'll know which crematory handles small bodies carefully; if not, ask whether a larger centre such as Amarillo has a practice they refer unusual patients to.

Amarillo is home to about 205,130 people, the 17th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.

Families in Amarillo often end up using a provider from Plainview (71 miles), Clovis (94 miles) and Lubbock (114 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

55.7%[1]

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Merck Veterinary Manual and Embrace Pet Insurance; we only apply it to this.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet

Cremation has grown steadily in Texas, where about 55.7%[1] of people now choose it, and newer pet providers have opened as demand rose. Smaller, newer operations can be more flexible about unusual species, offering a small-animal tray or an evening drop-off, while long-established ones may simply have seen more. Ask both how many animals under a pound they cremate in a typical month.

For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Amarillo rather than as pet data.

Amarillo weather, enclosures and timing

If you're thinking of burying your exotic pet's ashes, or a small mammal's body where it's allowed, the ground in Amarillo decides when. Many keepers here keep a frozen pet or an urn at home through winter and hold a small burial in spring. For amphibians, choose cremation or a spot well away from water whatever the season.

With seasons as wide as Amarillo's, keep a small loss kit ready all year: zip-seal bags, a marker, paper towels, gloves and a cool box. In July it saves minutes when minutes matter; in January, February and December it means you're not hunting for supplies during a power cut. Keepers with several animals often tape the vet's out-of-hours number inside the lid.

Amarillo prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip

Published industry ranges are wide: one US insurer lists private cremation from $100 to more than $500 and aquamation from about $80 to $450[5]. Where an Amarillo quote lands in that spread depends mostly on collection and extras, not on your pet's few ounces. Large exotics such as wallabies and emus are the exception; they're priced like big dogs, and some providers add a handling fee.

Paperwork, disposal and burial rules in Texas

Pet cremation is lightly regulated in most places, and few laws say what a provider must put in writing. That makes your own paperwork the safeguard. Ask for a signed form naming the species, the weight, individual or communal and what will be returned, and keep it with the certificate. After that, what's left to check in Texas is where burial and scattering are allowed.

The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Amarillo.

We keep Texas's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Texas rules summary. Before a home burial in Amarillo, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

What to do when your exotic pet dies in Amarillo

  1. If the death was sudden, start with the enclosure: is the power on, and are temperature, humidity and water quality where they should be? Any other animals of that species come first; aftercare can wait.
  2. Call the vet who treats your species in or near Amarillo, and ask whether a necropsy is worthwhile.
  3. Keep the body chilled, not frozen, until you've decided about a necropsy.
  4. Wash your hands and any tools you used before returning to the rest of your animals.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: will my pet be cremated individually, how will a very small body be kept separate, and what, honestly, will come back?
  6. Confirm everything in writing before you hand your pet over.

Remembering your exotic pet in Amarillo

Amarillo's weather swings hard. July highs reach the low 90s with dry heat, winters bring freezing nights from December through February, and the wind blows nearly all year. Blizzards, hail and dust storms can all close roads. In summer, keep a pet's body on a towel in an air-conditioned room with ice packs around it and call quickly; in a winter storm, a cool room indoors buys you time until roads clear.

Questions people ask

How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Amarillo page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Does the Amarillo climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Amarillo?

Usually yes. Plainview is about 71 miles away, Clovis is about 94 miles away and Lubbock is about 114 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I bury my exotic pet in winter when the ground is frozen?

Not until the thaw, in most cases. Many keepers in cold places keep their pet sealed in the freezer, or cremate and keep the urn, then bury in spring. For amphibians, choose a spot well away from water, or scatter or keep the ashes instead. There's no harm in waiting for a day that feels right.

Can I freeze-dry or preserve my pet instead of cremating?

Yes, but decide before cremation, because it needs the whole body. Freeze promptly in a sealed bag. Freeze-dry studios often take months and cost far more than cremation; one US studio charges about USD 650[7] for a pet under 1 lb. Ask for photos of the same species they've done, and whether they accept pets by courier.

What size urn do I need for a hedgehog or sugar glider?

A very small one. Cremated remains usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 400 gram hedgehog leaves around a tablespoon and a glider only a few grams. A keepsake urn, locket or small pouch usually fits. Standard pet urns are designed for cats and dogs and will look almost empty.
