Belgrade, Montana
Getting help with an unusual pet around Belgrade
Belgrade winters are cold, with December lows near 10F and frost that can arrive in October and hang on through April. With frozen soil for so many months, digging in a new-build backyard is rarely practical, and cremation tends to come first. July afternoons reach the mid-80s; on a day like that, set your pet's body on a towel in a shaded, air-conditioned room.
Belgrade is Gallatin County's second town, about 10 miles west of Bozeman on the flat valley floor, and it's where the region's main airport sits. Much of its growth has come as new subdivisions of single-family homes on former grain and hay fields. Providers based in the valley often cover both towns, so ask whether they'll collect from your house, whether a fee applies, and when to expect the ashes.
If nobody within driving distance of Belgrade will cremate your species, ask a specialist provider further away whether they accept small pets by arrangement, frozen and sent in insulated packaging. Not every courier carries animal remains, so the provider should tell you which service to use and how to pack. It adds cost, but for a tiny exotic it can be the difference between an individual cremation and none.
Belgrade is home to about 13,107 people, the 8th-largest of the 10 Montana communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Bozeman (10 miles, a larger centre), Helena (69 miles, a larger centre) and Butte-Silver Bow (72 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Belgrade routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
73.4%[1]
Montana had a 73.4% cremation rate in 2024, among the highest in the US.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
Where cremation is as routine as it is in Montana (roughly 73.4%[1] of human funerals), pet crematories are more likely to have a viewing room or let you be present as the cremation starts. Keepers of unusual pets often find this reassuring, because it removes any doubt about whether a tiny animal was handled on its own. If you'd like to attend, ask when you book, since it usually needs a set appointment.

Belgrade weather, enclosures and timing
For larger exotics kept outside, such as wallabies, a death in January, February, March, April, October, November and December often happens in a snowy paddock. Cold slows changes to the body but doesn't stop foxes and other scavengers, so move your animal into a shed or garage and cover it. Call a provider early in the day; rural collection in winter depends on daylight and road conditions.
Winter is when heating failures happen. A power cut or a failed heat mat in January, February, March, April, October, November and December can chill a room of tropical exotics fast, and sugar gliders, hedgehogs and many invertebrates don't cope with cold. If you lose an animal this way, tell the vet so they can judge whether a necropsy is useful, and warm the rest of your animals gradually, not suddenly.

How much to budget in Belgrade, from gliders to wallabies
If you're weighing preservation against cremation in Belgrade, the gap is large. One freeze-dry studio lists about $950 for a hedgehog, rat or ferret[5], several times a private cremation in the lowest weight band, and preservation takes months. Some families choose cremation and put the difference toward a custom memorial; others feel a preserved animal is worth it. Both are reasonable once you know the numbers.

Permits, protected species and burial in Montana
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Montana are about burial and scattering.
The official Montana local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Belgrade.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Montana level first; our Montana rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Belgrade or your HOA adds anything.
A practical checklist for Belgrade keepers
- Check that they've really died. A hedgehog that has gone cold and torpid, or a tarantula flipped over mid-molt, can look gone when it isn't. Warm them slowly if there's any doubt, and ring an exotics vet before you do anything else.
- Decide what you want first: a necropsy (post-mortem), preservation or cremation only. This decides how you store the body.
- Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Write the species, weight and date. Amphibians go in without tank water.
- Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation, and use either for cremation only. Aim to reach the vet within a day or two if you want a necropsy.
- Gather paperwork: any permit, CITES certificate, breeder or purchase record.
- Call a provider with the species and weight, and ask whether they've handled it before and what will be returned.
- Get the price in writing, including collection, the container and any certificate.
Keepsakes and tributes for an exotic pet in Belgrade
Belgrade's open setting gives wide views of the Bridger and Gallatin ranges across the fields. Many families keep a memorial right at home: a flat stone in a young lawn, a chokecherry planted along the fence line, an urn on the mantel. If you'd rather scatter ashes up in the mountains on public land, check with the managing agency before you go.

Questions people ask
Does the Belgrade climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, October, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How do Montana attitudes to cremation compare?
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) puts the Montana human cremation rate at about 73.4%[1]. We show it on the Belgrade page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belgrade?
Usually yes. Bozeman is about 10 miles away, Helena is about 69 miles away and Butte-Silver Bow is about 72 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My pet died after being bought recently. Should I contact the breeder?
It's worth it. Reputable breeders of gliders, hedgehogs and axolotls often want to know about early deaths, may offer advice on a necropsy and sometimes have health guarantees that require one. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, until you've spoken to them and your vet.
What size urn do I need for a hedgehog or sugar glider?
A very small one. Cremated remains usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 400 gram hedgehog leaves around a tablespoon and a glider only a few grams. A keepsake urn, locket or small pouch usually fits. Standard pet urns are designed for cats and dogs and will look almost empty.
What if a crematory in Belgrade refuses my species?
It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Billings. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.
