Hedgehogs, gliders, axolotls and more: cremation in Biloxi

Biloxi, Mississippi

Getting help with an unusual pet around Biloxi

Biloxi occupies a narrow peninsula between the Mississippi Sound and Back Bay, in Harrison County about 55 miles west of Mobile. Casino towers line the beachfront, while raised cottages, shotgun-style homes and post-Katrina rebuilds fill the older neighborhoods, and Keesler Air Force Base brings a steady turnover of military households. Coast aftercare providers usually cover Biloxi alongside Gulfport and D'Iberville; ask which town the crematory sits in and whether collection costs extra.

Biloxi's August highs average near 90F, with Gulf humidity that makes the air feel hotter, while January lows around 44F mean frost is rare. After a pet's death, warmth is the pressing problem. A tiled bathroom with the air conditioning running works well, with a bag of ice from the corner store wrapped in a towel beneath the body. Storm-season outages make a cooler worth keeping on hand.

Around Biloxi, the nearest practice may be a mixed or farm vet more used to calves and horses than to gliders. Don't let that put you off. A farm vet can confirm death, store a body and often knows a provider that takes larger animals, which is exactly what you need for a wallaby, a big skunk or a kinkajou. For a tiny exotic, they can simply hold your pet in the clinic freezer until you've chosen.

With roughly 48,516 residents, Biloxi is the 5th-largest of the 21 Mississippi communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Biloxi are based about 55 miles away in Mobile, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Ocean Springs (6 miles), Gulfport (13 miles) and Gautier (13 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

<40%[1]

As of 2025, Mississippi was the only US state with a cremation rate below 40%, per CANA's 2026 report.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on Merck Veterinary Manual and Embrace Pet Insurance.

A exotic pet at home in Biloxi

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets

Only about <40%[1] of people in Mississippi are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition. For exotic pets that often means a small grave in the garden. That's fine for many mammals where rules allow, but think carefully with amphibians and aquatic pets, whose diseases can reach wild frogs and salamanders through water. Cremation is still available, often via a regional crematory.

For the Mississippi figure we rely on Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Biloxi rather than as pet data.

Biloxi weather, enclosures and timing

Flies and ants find a body quickly in hot weather, especially in a reptile room or a screened porch. During June, July, August and September, don't leave your pet in the enclosure while you make calls: move them straight into a sealed bag and then the fridge or freezer. For invertebrates such as tarantulas, check the enclosure for mites or other pests before it's used for another animal.

When August brings highs near 90°F, a memorial outdoors takes some planning. Hold any small burial or scattering early in the morning, water hard ground the evening before, and skip candles or lanterns if there's any fire risk. A keepsake urn can wait indoors until a cooler day in autumn; a goodbye has no deadline.

Biloxi prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip

A tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill. Minimum charges, collection fees and a certificate can make a hedgehog's cremation cost as much as a cat's, even though the cremation itself uses far less time. Remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a hedgehog's fill a tablespoon. If very little ash will return, ask whether a simple pouch or small keepsake container lowers the Biloxi price, and compare two quotes.

The full price table by size is on our Mississippi page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Mississippi expects after an exotic pet dies

If you rent in Mississippi, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.

To find your county or city office in Mississippi, start with the official Mississippi local government directory.

Start with the Mississippi rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Biloxi's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

Step by step in Biloxi

  1. Choose the provider before the appointment. Check two things: that they accept your species, and that your vet can pass your pet to them straight afterwards.
  2. Ask the vet how it works for a small exotic. Many sedate first with gas or an injection, because veins are tiny; knowing this in advance makes the day less frightening.
  3. Decide whether you'll stay. Many keepers do. Bring the pouch, nest box or hide your pet sleeps in so they're settled.
  4. Say what you'd like kept: a few quills, a clip of fur, or a paw print if the feet are big enough to show one.
  5. Write clear instructions on the release form: the species, individual cremation, and that the remains come back to you.
  6. Ask for an itemized receipt, one from the provider and one from the vet.
  7. Plan something gentle for afterwards. Coming home to an empty enclosure is hard. Some people clean it out the same evening; others can't face it for a few days.

Ways to remember them that fit the species

The beach along Highway 90, the old lighthouse in the median, and the quiet waters of Back Bay are places many Biloxi residents associate with slow evenings. Public beaches and the Sound have rules about what can be left there, so check before scattering. Many families prefer a shaded corner of their own yard, a relative's land across the bay, or an urn kept safely indoors.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Biloxi actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Mobile, about 55 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Biloxi and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Biloxi?

Usually yes. Ocean Springs is about 6 miles away, Gulfport is about 13 miles away and Gautier is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Mississippi?

For people, yes: about <40%[1] of Mississippi deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Biloxi follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Does the Biloxi climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

What if a crematory in Biloxi refuses my species?

It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Jackson. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.

Will a provider near Biloxi cremate a venomous or dangerous exotic?

Most will, once the animal has died, but tell them the species up front. Some providers ask for venomous invertebrates or reptiles to arrive in a sealed, rigid container so staff don't handle them directly, and some need permit details for regulated animals. If a local crematory in Biloxi declines, your exotics vet can usually arrange cremation through the provider they already use.
