Novi, Michigan
Finding a provider for an unusual pet in Novi
Novi is a fast-growing Oakland County city about 25 miles from downtown Detroit, sitting where I-96, I-696 and M-5 converge. Much of its housing is recent: 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, townhouse communities, and apartments clustered near Twelve Oaks Mall and the Grand River Avenue corridor. Providers that cover western Oakland County drive to Novi routinely, and a couple of quotes compared side by side will show you the real price range.
Walled Lake borders Novi to the north, and Lakeshore Park on its shore is a popular summer spot. Public shoreline and parkland aren't places to scatter ashes without the city's permission. Many Novi subdivisions have homeowners associations, so check their rules before burying a small animal in the yard, or choose cremation and give the ashes a place inside the house.
Around Novi, it's common for a family to handle the goodbye locally and the cremation regionally: the vet confirms the death and holds the body, and a crematory near Detroit collects on its next run. That works well for exotics too, as long as the paperwork follows your pet. Write the species, weight and 'individual cremation' on the bag label as well as the form.
With roughly 67,319 residents, Novi is the 17th-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. Detroit, roughly 25 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Novi run from there.
Families in Novi often end up using a provider from Farmington Hills (6 miles), Livonia (8 miles) and Southfield (12 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
69.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Michigan's cremation rate at 69.5% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation in Michigan, and what it means for exotic pets
Cremation is common but not universal in Michigan, at about 69.5%[1] of people. For exotic keepers, that mix is useful: you'll find both crematories and families who bury small pets at home. Whichever feels right, think about the species. Mammals are simple; amphibians, axolotls and anything that lived in water need more care about where they end up.
That Michigan rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Novi only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Novi weather, enclosures and timing
Hedgehogs kept too cold can try to hibernate, which is dangerous for African pygmy hedgehogs and can look like death at first. If your hedgehog is cold and still in winter, warm them gently and call an exotics vet before assuming the worst. If they have died, bag and refrigerate them, and ask whether a necropsy would help.
There's no need to drive to a crematory on an icy day in January, February, March, November and December. A small exotic keeps in the freezer for weeks, so wait for clear roads. When you do travel, pack the body in a cool box so it stays frozen in the heated car, and keep your living animals' heating on a backup plan in case the power goes while you're out.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Novi
Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[2], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing Novi quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.

Permits, protected species and burial in Michigan
Invasive-species laws are written for living animals, but the reasoning applies after a death too. Anything from an enclosure that could carry a non-native parasite, fungus or seed, such as substrate, tank water or live plants, shouldn't be dumped outdoors. Bag it for household waste, or ask your vet. The notes for Michigan below cover burial and scattering of your pet itself.
The official Michigan local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Novi.
We keep Michigan's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Michigan rules summary. Before a home burial in Novi, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Novi
- Check that they've really died. A hedgehog that has gone cold and torpid, or a tarantula flipped over mid-molt, can look gone when it isn't. Warm them slowly if there's any doubt, and ring an exotics vet before you do anything else.
- Decide what you want first: a necropsy (post-mortem), preservation or cremation only. This decides how you store the body.
- Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Note the date, the weight and what species they are. Don't add tank water for a frog or newt.
- Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation; if it's cremation only, either works. When a necropsy matters, try to get to the vet inside a day or two.
- Gather paperwork: any permit, CITES certificate, breeder or purchase record.
- Call a provider with the species and weight, and ask whether they've handled it before and what will be returned.
- Get the price in writing, including collection, the container and any certificate.
Memorials that suit an unusual companion
Novi's January nights can bottom out around 16F, while July afternoons climb into the mid-80s. On a summer day, lower the thermostat, lay your pet on a folded towel in the lowest, coolest room of the house, and tuck frozen gel packs along the back and belly. In winter an unheated garage helps for a few hours, but a midwinter thaw can warm it more than you'd expect.

Questions people ask
How does Novi's weather affect exotic pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Novi, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Why does the Novi page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 69.5%[1] of Michigan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Novi?
The closest communities we cover are Farmington Hills (about 6 miles), Livonia (about 8 miles) and Southfield (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Novi too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Detroit to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Detroit (roughly 25 miles from Novi) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Novi?
Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so private cremation in Novi usually costs about what a small cat's would: roughly $100 to $175 nationally, with communal around $45 to $75. Large exotics such as wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, a keepsake urn and a certificate can add to the total, so ask for a written, itemised quote.
Is there anywhere near Novi that offers water cremation for pets?
Possibly. Pet aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) has spread faster among pet providers than human funeral homes, but it still tends to be found near larger cities. It's legal for people in 26[7] US states, which hints at where it's easiest to find. It uses warm water and alkali instead of flame and can return a little more bone material, which helps with small animals. Ask providers directly or mention it in your request.
