New Albany, Indiana
Exotic pet aftercare in New Albany: the local picture
New Albany is the seat of Floyd County, set on the Ohio River directly across from Louisville, roughly six miles from that city's center. Housing ranges from grand 19th-century homes near downtown to shotgun houses, postwar ranches and newer builds climbing into the knobs to the west. Many aftercare providers serving Louisville also cross the bridges into Southern Indiana, so ask whether a Kentucky-based quote treats your address as local or adds a travel charge.
New Albany's riverside summers are among Indiana's warmest, with July highs close to 89 and air that feels thick by mid-morning. Should your pet die at home then, pull the blinds, crank the air conditioning, and lay frozen bags of peas or gel packs, wrapped in cloth, beside the body. Because only January and February reliably freeze here, even a winter garage shouldn't be trusted for more than a night.
Rural keepers around New Albany often have land, and home burial of a small mammal is common. Bury deep enough that wildlife won't dig, away from wells and streams, and check local rules first. For amphibians, axolotls and anything that lived in water, bury well away from ponds and ditches or choose cremation, because amphibian diseases travel through water to wild populations.
New Albany is home to about 37,463 people, the 26th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Louisville, about 6 miles (9 km) away, which is where some providers serving New Albany are based.
Our pages for Clarksville (3 miles), Louisville (5 miles, a larger centre) and Jeffersonville (7 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers New Albany as well.

Cremation in Indiana, and what it means for exotic pets
In Indiana, about 56.5%[1] of people are cremated. That places it in the middle: plenty of crematories, but not all of them used to unusual requests. Exotics vets are the best bridge, because they deal with local providers regularly and know which ones have handled small mammals, amphibians or invertebrates carefully.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Indiana figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in New Albany tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
New Albany weather, enclosures and timing
In July, don't leave your pet's body in a car while you run errands, even in a cool box, and don't plan a garden burial in the heat of the afternoon. If the provider can't take your pet for a few days, the freezer is the safest place. Label the bag with the species, weight and date so there's no confusion later.
Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across New Albany in July, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.

New Albany prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip
Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. New Albany providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.

What Indiana rules mean for an exotic pet
Some exotic pets carry germs that can pass to people, most famously Salmonella in reptiles and amphibians, which is why the CDC advises washing your hands after every contact. The same care applies after death: wear gloves or wash well after handling the body, and double-bag it if it shares a fridge with food. Local burial and scattering notes for Indiana follow.

What to do next, in order
- Move your pet out of the enclosure into a clean, sealed bag. Leave heating and lighting running for any tank-mates.
- Label the bag with your name, today's date, the weight and the species.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, tell the vet before arranging cremation. Testing may be needed first.
- Store the body: fridge if a necropsy will happen in the next day or two, freezer if it'll be longer.
- Check your paperwork if the species needed a permit or CITES records, and whether you need to report the death.
- Book the cremation when you have a provider who knows the species well, and request a certificate that states what they were.
Keeping a small, special pet close
The Ohio River Greenway runs along the waterfront from New Albany toward Clarksville and Jeffersonville, and the steep wooded knobs rise just west of town. Both make natural places to remember a companion, though scattering on public land or near the river can be subject to rules, so ask before you go. A garden bed at home is always an option that needs no one's permission.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from New Albany?
Usually yes. Clarksville is about 3 miles away, Louisville is about 5 miles away and Jeffersonville is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Indiana?
For people, yes: about 56.5%[1] of Indiana deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in New Albany follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve New Albany actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Louisville, about 6 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for New Albany and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in New Albany?
January and February: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 89°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Does pet insurance pay for exotic pet cremation?
Usually not. Most standard policies treat cremation as outside cover, even when they pay for a medically necessary euthanasia[7], and plenty of insurers won't cover exotic species in the first place. A few add-ons pay toward cremation or keepsakes. If you hold an exotic pet policy, look through its end-of-life wording before booking, and keep itemized receipts in case a claim is possible.
What should I do if my exotic pet dies in the New Albany summer heat?
Act within an hour or two: seal your pet in a labelled bag and refrigerate if you want a necropsy, or freeze for preservation or cremation. Small bodies change fast in heat. If the death followed an air-conditioning or power failure, check your other animals straight away and tell your vet what happened.
