Rome, Georgia
Exotic pet aftercare in Rome: the local picture
Rome is the seat of Floyd County in northwest Georgia, about 58 miles from Atlanta, and it grew up where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers meet to form the Coosa. The town is known for its hills, its brick downtown along Broad Street and its colleges. Housing ranges from older frame houses on steep streets to rural homes out in the county. Tell any provider which side of the rivers you live on, since bridges shape the route.
Northwest Georgia gets long, sticky summers and real winter cold snaps, with frost common from December into February. If your cat, rabbit or other small companion dies during a warm spell, lower the temperature around them quickly: an air-conditioned room, a cotton sheet beneath, and cold packs swaddled in dish towels at their sides. In a cold month, an unheated room works for a few hours while you make calls.
A crematory that serves Rome from further away may run collection rounds only on certain days. For a tiny pet, it's usually easier to take them to the vet, or to the crematory yourself, packed in a cool box. Ask when the next round is and whether the vet has a freezer or a cold room while you wait.
With roughly 38,934 residents, Rome is the 30th-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Rome are based about 58 miles away in Atlanta, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Calhoun (22 miles), Cartersville (23 miles) and Acworth (32 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Rome as well.
54.2%[1]
The NFDA projected Georgia's cremation rate at 54.2% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Georgia, and what they mean for keepers
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Georgia, at about 54.2%[1], but burial still has deep roots. Both are open to exotic keepers too. For a hedgehog or glider, burial in the garden can be simple where rules allow; for amphibians and aquatic pets, cremation avoids any risk of disease reaching wild animals through water.
That Georgia rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Rome only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Rome weather, enclosures and timing
If you're planning to bury your pet or their ashes in Rome, the season matters: frozen ground in winter, dry ground in summer. For amphibians and aquatic pets, choose a spot far from water or choose cremation, because some amphibian diseases spread through water to wild animals.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Rome
Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[2], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing Rome quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.

Before you bury or cremate: Georgia rules worth knowing
If you rent in Georgia, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.

From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Rome
- Tell your child simply and honestly that their pet has died. Avoid 'went to sleep', which can make bedtime frightening.
- Offer a chance to say goodbye if they'd like one. A small animal wrapped in a soft cloth looks peaceful.
- Seal and chill the body afterwards, labelled with the name your child used.
- Let them help choose between cremation and a safe burial spot, and pick a small container or keepsake.
- Ask the provider whether a drawing or short letter can go with their pet. A small piece of paper is usually fine with most.
- Explain how long it will take for the remains to come home, and mark the day on a calendar.
- Keep routines steady, and be ready to talk about their pet as often as they need to.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
The rivers are central to how Rome sees itself, and the riverwalk trails that follow them are where many residents spent evenings with their animals. Scattering along public riverbanks is up to the city or whoever owns the land, so ask before you go. Many Floyd County families simply bring the urn home instead and plant a native shrub where a pet liked to doze in the afternoon sun.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Georgia?
For people, yes: about 54.2%[1] of Georgia deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rome follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rome?
Usually yes. Calhoun is about 22 miles away, Cartersville is about 23 miles away and Acworth is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Atlanta to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Atlanta (roughly 58 miles from Rome) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Will a provider near Rome cremate a venomous or dangerous exotic?
Most will, once the animal has died, but tell them the species up front. Some providers ask for venomous invertebrates or reptiles to arrive in a sealed, rigid container so staff don't handle them directly, and some need permit details for regulated animals. If a local crematory in Rome declines, your exotics vet can usually arrange cremation through the provider they already use.
Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?
Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
Is there a pet crematory in Rome, or will my pet have to travel?
In a smaller place, your pet will often travel to a regional crematory, commonly one near Atlanta, either on a vet's collection round or with you driving. That's normal and needn't worry you. Small exotics travel well, packed cold in an insulated box. Ask your vet which provider they use, how often it collects, and whether you can deliver your pet yourself if you'd rather.
