Cape Canaveral, Florida
Who handles exotic species near Cape Canaveral, and how to reach them
On the Space Coast, July highs sit near 91F and winters are gentle. Ocean breezes take the edge off, but they do nothing to slow how quickly a pet's body warms in a sunny apartment. Keep your animal in an air-conditioned room while you make arrangements. In hurricane season, the barrier island can be placed under evacuation orders, so ask providers how storms affect their service.
Rocket launches are woven into life in Cape Canaveral, and some families remember a pet by watching a launch from a spot they loved together. If you hope to release ashes offshore, federal rules apply; check them before you head out. Scattering on the beach may be limited by the city or by sea turtle protections. Keeping the ashes at home first takes the pressure off.
In a smaller place like Cape Canaveral, the local vet may never have arranged cremation for a hedgehog or an axolotl, and the regional crematory they use may be an hour or more away, often somewhere around Orlando. That doesn't mean it can't be done. It means you should give the species and weight up front, and expect the ashes, if any, to take a little longer to come back.
Cape Canaveral is home to about 9,962 people, the 163rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 48 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Cape Canaveral run from there.
Our pages for Cocoa Beach (5 miles), Merritt Island (6 miles, a larger centre) and Cocoa (8 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Cape Canaveral as well.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Merck Veterinary Manual and Merck Veterinary Manual, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
Cremation accounts for roughly 72.5%[1] of funerals for people in Florida, and many families here scatter ashes somewhere meaningful. With an exotic pet, the amount may be too small to scatter at all: a sugar glider's remains could fit in a thimble. Some keepers mix them into a planter's soil or keep them whole in a locket instead. There's no wrong choice, but it helps to know before you book roughly what you'll receive.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Cape Canaveral tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning around the Cape Canaveral weather when an exotic pet dies
Hot months (May, June, July, August and September) are also when enclosure failures do their damage. A power cut, a failed thermostat or an air-conditioner breakdown can overheat a room of gliders, hedgehogs or amphibians in hours. If you lose an animal this way, tell the vet: it helps them decide whether a necropsy is useful, and it helps you protect the animals you still have.
Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across Cape Canaveral in July, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.

Budgeting for an exotic pet's cremation in Cape Canaveral
Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[2], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing Cape Canaveral quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.

What Florida expects after an exotic pet dies
Pet cremation is lightly regulated in most places, and few laws say what a provider must put in writing. That makes your own paperwork the safeguard. Ask for a signed form naming the species, the weight, individual or communal and what will be returned, and keep it with the certificate. After that, what's left to check in Florida is where burial and scattering are allowed.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Cape Canaveral or your HOA adds anything.
What to do when your exotic pet dies in Cape Canaveral
- Take a breath. A small exotic in a sealed bag in the freezer is safe for weeks. Nothing has to be decided tonight.
- Keep anything you'd like to hold on to now: a shed molt, a few quills, a tuft of fur, a feather or a photo of them in their enclosure.
- Think about preservation first. Taxidermy, resin and freeze-drying each need the body intact, and once cremation has happened that door is closed.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your vet, or just send us your pet's details instead and we'll find out who accepts your species.
- Choose individual or communal, knowing that very small animals may return little or no ash.
- Decide where the remains will go: into a pendant, a keepsake urn, a planter, or a small grave somewhere burial is permitted.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
Cape Canaveral is a small city on the Brevard County barrier island, squeezed between the Atlantic and the Banana River, next to Port Canaveral and within sight of the launch pads. Many residents live in condos and apartments, and cruise traffic can clog the causeways on ship days. When arranging collection, mention the building, parking situation and whether there is an elevator, so the provider can plan.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 48 miles from Cape Canaveral) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cape Canaveral?
Usually yes. Cocoa Beach is about 5 miles away, Merritt Island is about 6 miles away and Cocoa is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Cape Canaveral page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Cape Canaveral?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
What size urn do I need for a hedgehog or sugar glider?
A very small one. Cremated remains usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 400 gram hedgehog leaves around a tablespoon and a glider only a few grams. A keepsake urn, locket or small pouch usually fits. Standard pet urns are designed for cats and dogs and will look almost empty.
Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?
Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
