Conway, Arkansas
Who handles exotic species near Conway, and how to reach them
Conway's summers peak in August around 93°F, and freezes come in December, January and February. In the heat, a pet's body should be cooled within an hour or two, using towels, wrapped ice packs and a cool, shaded room. In winter, an unheated room is usually enough. Spring storms sweep across central Arkansas, and if a tornado warning delays collection, keeping your pet cool makes the wait manageable.
Between Lake Conway to the south and the Arkansas River at Toad Suck Park to the west, Conway families have favorite outdoor spots they shared with their pets. Some owners choose to scatter a pinch of ashes near water they visited together, once they've checked any rules for that land. Others keep a small urn on a bookshelf with a photo. Both are good ways to remember.
Word of mouth matters in a town like Conway. Local keepers' groups, reptile and exotic shows and breeders often know which provider is happy with unusual species and which one isn't. It's reasonable to ask the crematory directly, too: 'Have you cremated a hedgehog, or anything this small, before, and did you return ashes?'
With roughly 72,328 residents, Conway is the 7th-largest of the 26 Arkansas communities we cover. Little Rock, roughly 25 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Conway run from there.
Families in Conway often end up using a provider from Maumelle (17 miles), Sherwood (21 miles) and Jacksonville (23 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
52.2%[1]
The NFDA projected Arkansas's cremation rate at 52.2% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets
About 52.2%[1] of people in Arkansas are cremated, a figure that has risen for years. Pet cremation has followed, but exotic pets are still a small part of any crematory's work, so the first provider you call may be unsure. Give the species and weight, explain what you hope to get back, and ask whether they'll handle your pet individually.
The Arkansas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Conway, not as a count of pets.
Conway weather, enclosures and timing
Weather also affects preservation. Freeze-dry studios and taxidermists prefer bodies frozen promptly, and in a Conway summer that means within an hour or two. In winter, don't be tempted to leave a body in a cold garage: temperatures swing, and a thawed-and-refrozen body is harder to preserve well.
With seasons as wide as Conway's, keep a small loss kit ready all year: zip-seal bags, a marker, paper towels, gloves and a cool box. In August it saves minutes when minutes matter; in January, February and December it means you're not hunting for supplies during a power cut. Keepers with several animals often tape the vet's out-of-hours number inside the lid.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Conway
Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[2], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing Conway quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.

Before you bury or cremate: Arkansas rules worth knowing
Cremating an exotic pet is rarely regulated on its own, but a few things around it can be. If your species needed a permit while alive, the permit may ask you to report the death. Protected species listed under CITES, the treaty on trade in endangered animals, may need their records kept. Burial and scattering follow local rules. Here's what applies in Arkansas.
Arkansas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Conway.
The Arkansas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Conway's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Conway
- Tell your child simply and honestly that their pet has died. Avoid 'went to sleep', which can make bedtime frightening.
- Offer a chance to say goodbye if they'd like one. A small animal wrapped in a soft cloth looks peaceful.
- Seal and chill the body afterwards, with the bag marked using your child's name for them.
- Let them help choose whether it's cremation or a safe place to bury, and let them pick out a keepsake or a little container.
- Ask the provider whether a drawing or short letter can go with their pet. A small piece of paper is usually fine with most.
- Explain how long it will take before the remains are back, and circle that date on a calendar together.
- Keep routines steady, and be ready to talk about their pet as often as they need to.
Memorials that suit an unusual companion
Conway calls itself the City of Colleges, with the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College and Central Baptist College all in town, so a lot of pets live in student rentals and apartments. The rest of the city mixes older neighborhoods near downtown with subdivisions along the I-40 corridor. Many residents commute to Little Rock, about 25 miles south, so when you ask for options, give a time when someone will be home for collection.

Questions people ask
Why does the Conway page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 52.2%[1] of Arkansas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Conway climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Conway?
Usually yes. Maumelle is about 17 miles away, Sherwood is about 21 miles away and Jacksonville is about 23 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Little Rock to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Little Rock (roughly 25 miles from Conway) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
My heating failed in winter and my pet died. What now?
First warm your other animals gradually and check them over. Then seal your pet in a bag and refrigerate if you'd like a vet to look at them; cold-related deaths are worth mentioning to an exotics vet, especially with sugar gliders and hedgehogs. For cremation only, the freezer is fine while you find a provider.
How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Conway?
Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so private cremation in Conway usually costs about what a small cat's would: roughly $100 to $175 nationally, with communal around $45 to $75. Large exotics such as wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, a keepsake urn and a certificate can add to the total, so ask for a written, itemised quote.
