Saying goodbye to an exotic pet in Bryant

Bryant, Arkansas

Who handles exotic species near Bryant, and how to reach them

Bryant's summers peak around 92°F, and January is usually the only freezing month, though ice storms reach Saline County some winters. In warm weather, cool your pet's body quickly with towels and wrapped ice packs in the coolest room of the house. Spring storms and tornado warnings pass through central Arkansas, and a short delay is manageable if your pet stays cool.

Bryant is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in central Arkansas, stretching along I-30 about 15 miles southwest of Little Rock, between Benton and the capital. Most pets here live in newer single-family homes in subdivisions, some with HOA rules that limit backyard burial. Many owners commute, so when you ask for aftercare options, give a time when someone will be home for collection.

Around Bryant, it's common for a family to handle the goodbye locally and the cremation regionally: the vet confirms the death and holds the body, and a crematory near Little Rock collects on its next run. That works well for exotics too, as long as the paperwork follows your pet. Write the species, weight and 'individual cremation' on the bag label as well as the form.

With roughly 22,815 residents, Bryant is the 24th-largest of the 26 Arkansas communities we cover. Little Rock, roughly 15 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Bryant run from there.

Families in Bryant often end up using a provider from Benton (5 miles), Little Rock (15 miles, a larger centre) and Maumelle (17 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

52.2%[1]

The NFDA projected Arkansas's cremation rate at 52.2% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Arkansas, and what they mean for keepers

Cremation has grown steadily in Arkansas, where about 52.2%[1] of people now choose it, and newer pet providers have opened as demand rose. Smaller, newer operations can be more flexible about unusual species, offering a small-animal tray or an evening drop-off, while long-established ones may simply have seen more. Ask both how many animals under a pound they cremate in a typical month.

For the Arkansas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bryant rather than as pet data.

Bryant weather, enclosures and timing

Flies and ants find a body quickly in hot weather, especially in a reptile room or a screened porch. During June, July, August and September, don't leave your pet in the enclosure while you make calls: move them straight into a sealed bag and then the fridge or freezer. For invertebrates such as tarantulas, check the enclosure for mites or other pests before it's used for another animal.

Many Bryant keepers run enclosures with heat lamps, mats and misting, and summer highs near 92°F put extra strain on all of it. After a loss, check the rest of the room: temperatures, humidity and equipment. If more than one animal is unwell, call the vet before you do anything with the body, because they may want to examine it.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Bryant

Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. Bryant providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.

The full price table by size is on our Arkansas page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you bury or cremate: Arkansas rules worth knowing

Invasive-species laws are written for living animals, but the reasoning applies after a death too. Anything from an enclosure that could carry a non-native parasite, fungus or seed, such as substrate, tank water or live plants, shouldn't be dumped outdoors. Bag it for household waste, or ask your vet. The notes for Arkansas below cover burial and scattering of your pet itself.

The official Arkansas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Bryant.

The Arkansas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Bryant's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

Step by step in Bryant

  1. Take a breath. A small exotic in a sealed bag in the freezer is safe for weeks. Nothing has to be decided tonight.
  2. Keep anything you'd like to hold on to now: a shed molt, a few quills, a tuft of fur, a feather or a photo of them in their enclosure.
  3. Think about preservation before cremation. Freeze-drying, resin or taxidermy all need the whole body, and none can happen after cremation.
  4. Contact a provider through your vet or directly, or send us your pet's details and we'll check who takes your species.
  5. Choose individual or communal, knowing that very small animals may return little or no ash.
  6. Decide where the remains will go: a keepsake urn, a planter, a pendant or a small burial where it's allowed.

Ways to remember them that fit the species

Bishop Park, with its trails, fields and ponds, is a hub of Bryant life, and many families spent time there with their pets. Some owners remember a pet with a photo from a favorite spot beside the urn, while others place a small memorial stone in the backyard. If you'd like to scatter a small amount of ashes outdoors, check the rules for the place you choose first.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Little Rock to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Little Rock (roughly 15 miles from Bryant) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bryant?

Usually yes. Benton is about 5 miles away, Little Rock is about 15 miles away and Maumelle is about 17 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Arkansas?

For people, yes: about 52.2%[1] of Arkansas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bryant follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Does the Bryant climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Is there anywhere near Bryant that offers water cremation for pets?

Possibly. Pet aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) has spread faster among pet providers than human funeral homes, but it still tends to be found near larger cities. It's legal for people in 26[7] US states, which hints at where it's easiest to find. It uses warm water and alkali instead of flame and can return a little more bone material, which helps with small animals. Ask providers directly or mention it in your request.

Is there a pet crematory in Bryant, or will my pet have to travel?

In a smaller place, your pet will often travel to a regional crematory, commonly one near Little Rock, either on a vet's collection round or with you driving. That's normal and needn't worry you. Small exotics travel well, packed cold in an insulated box. Ask your vet which provider they use, how often it collects, and whether you can deliver your pet yourself if you'd rather.
