Opelika, Alabama
Getting help with an unusual pet around Opelika
East Alabama has long, sticky summers and short winters, and many Opelika homes are older brick houses where back rooms can run warm when the air conditioning is working hard. If your pet dies at home between May and September, choose the coolest floor in the house, lay them on a towel over a waterproof sheet and try to arrange collection or drop-off the same day. From December to February you have a little more breathing room.
Opelika keeps a small-town rhythm, with a restored downtown, front porches and neighbors who know each other's animals by name. Many households have enough yard to bury ashes under a favorite shrub, and cremation also suits families with roots split between Opelika, Auburn and Georgia, since ashes can be shared. Ask whether the quote is for private cremation, with only your pet's ashes returned, or communal, where none come back.
In a small community like Opelika, a child's hedgehog or axolotl may be the only one they know of, and the loss can feel lonely for them. Involving them helps: let them choose a small item to go with their pet, decorate the box or pick where the keepsake will sit. If the cremation is done regionally and takes a week or two, tell them roughly when their pet will come home, so the wait has an end.
Opelika's population is around 35,765, the 15th-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. Columbus, roughly 27 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Opelika run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Auburn (7 miles, a larger centre), Phenix City (25 miles) and Columbus (27 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Opelika too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
42.3%[1]
The NFDA projected Alabama's cremation rate at 42.3% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Merck Veterinary Manual and Embrace Pet Insurance; we only apply it to this.

Cremation in Alabama, and what it means for exotic pets
In Alabama, only about 42.3%[1] of people are cremated. Pet crematories do exist, but they may be further apart, and an exotic pet may need to travel. Small exotics travel well: sealed, frozen or chilled in a cool box, they can be driven to the right provider without any hurry. Larger animals need more planning.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Alabama figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Opelika tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning around the Opelika weather when an exotic pet dies
Weather doesn't affect the ashes themselves. Cremated remains can be posted or collected in any season, and they don't need special storage. If you plan to carry them on a flight or across a border later, keep the certificate with the urn and check the carrier's rules first.

How much to budget in Opelika, from gliders to wallabies
Containers are where a small pet's bill can surprise you in Opelika. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more[5] than a full-size wooden urn from the same crematory, because small, finely made pieces aren't cheaper to produce. If a standard urn is included, ask whether they'll swap it for a keepsake at no charge, or return the remains in a simple pouch you can move later.

Rules and paperwork in Alabama
Invasive-species laws are written for living animals, but the reasoning applies after a death too. Anything from an enclosure that could carry a non-native parasite, fungus or seed, such as substrate, tank water or live plants, shouldn't be dumped outdoors. Bag it for household waste, or ask your vet. The notes for Alabama below cover burial and scattering of your pet itself.

The rules that apply across Alabama (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Alabama page. Opelika may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do next, in order
- Move your pet out of the enclosure into a clean, sealed bag. Leave heating and lighting running for any tank-mates.
- Label the bag with the species, weight, date and your name.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, tell the vet before arranging cremation. Testing may be needed first.
- Store the body: fridge for a necropsy within a day or two, freezer for anything longer.
- Check your paperwork if the species needed a permit or CITES records, and whether you need to report the death.
- Book the cremation when you have a provider who knows the species well, and request a certificate that states what they were.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
Opelika is the Lee County seat, sharing a border with Auburn and sitting about 27 miles from Columbus, Georgia, across the state line. Aftercare providers serving east Alabama may come from either side of that line, so mention whether you live near the old railroad downtown, in the newer subdivisions toward Auburn, or out on a county road past Saugahatchee Lake. Distance often shapes the collection fee more than anything else.

Questions people ask
Why does the Opelika page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 42.3%[1] of Alabama residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Columbus to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Columbus (roughly 27 miles from Opelika) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Opelika?
Usually yes. Auburn is about 7 miles away, Phenix City is about 25 miles away and Columbus is about 27 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Should I choose a provider in Opelika or one further away?
Choose the one that's confident with your species. For small exotics, distance matters little: frozen or chilled in a cool box, your pet can travel an hour without any problem. A provider who has cremated hedgehogs or axolotls before, and tells you honestly what will return, is worth a drive.
Can someone collect my wallaby or other large exotic in Opelika?
Some providers can, especially those that also handle large dogs or farm animals. Give the weight and the full length, including tail, so they can send enough people and check their chamber fits. If they can't collect, you may need to deliver by car or trailer. Ask about mileage if the provider is based near Columbus.
Can I freeze-dry or preserve my pet instead of cremating?
Yes, but decide before cremation, because it needs the whole body. Freeze promptly in a sealed bag. Freeze-dry studios often take months and cost far more than cremation; one US studio charges about USD 650[7] for a pet under 1 lb. Ask for photos of the same species they've done, and whether they accept pets by courier.
