Exotic pet cremation in Zurich

Zurich, Switzerland

Getting help with an unusual pet around Zurich

Most people in Zurich live in apartments, and many rent, so pets here often share compact flats in older buildings in districts like Wiedikon or Oerlikon. In an older building without a lift, carrying your pet down may need two people, and street parking near the entrance can be scarce. Many families call their vet first, since clinics can often keep a pet briefly and help arrange cremation.

The city's waste and recycling service, ERZ, publishes guidance on animal remains. It runs an ordinary intake route for small animals and pets, and it also describes cremation and, under certain conditions, burial options for pets. Large animals such as cattle and horses go through a separate specialist transport route, with categories based on weight as well as animal type. To get your pet's ashes back, the cremation has to be an individual one, so request that explicitly.

Some keepers in Zurich use their regular dog-and-cat vet for aftercare even though a specialist treated the animal. That's fine; any vet can hold a body and arrange cremation. Just make sure they know the species and weight, and ask them to note 'individual cremation, return any remains' on the paperwork so a very small body isn't treated as a communal case by default.

Zurich is home to about 415,000 people, the largest of the 3 Switzerland communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are Zollikon (3 miles), Kusnacht (4 miles) and Lucerne (25 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Zurich too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

90%[1]

About 90% of people who died in Switzerland in 2020 were cremated.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Switzerland thinks about cremation

In Switzerland, about 90%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, families rarely feel they have to justify wanting ashes back, even for a hedgehog. Competition between providers also helps exotic keepers: a crematory that wants the business is more likely to try a small-animal tray or talk you through what will realistically remain.

bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) is where the Switzerland figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Zurich tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

What the Zurich seasons mean for exotic pets and aftercare

If you don't know how warm or cold your animal room gets, a cheap min-max thermometer tells you more than any forecast. After a loss, write down the reading. It helps your vet judge whether heat or cold played a part, and it protects the animals still in your care in Zurich.

Zurich prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip

Ashes can take longer to come back than keepers expect; one Swedish vet group says two to four weeks is normal[5]. For a very small exotic, the wait is the same as for a large dog, because remains follow the crematorium's schedule, not the pet's size. Ask Zurich providers for a return date and whether a faster return costs extra.

The Switzerland price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Permits, protected species and burial in Switzerland

Never flush a dead axolotl, frog, fish or invertebrate, and never empty its tank water into a garden, pond or storm drain. Amphibian chytrid fungus and other diseases spread this way, and released animals, even dead ones, can carry invasive organisms. Beyond that common-sense rule, here is what Switzerland says about burial and scattering.

City of Zürich Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich publishes Zurich's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.

From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Zurich

  1. If the death was sudden, look at the enclosure first: temperature, humidity, power and water quality. If you keep others of the same species, their safety comes before aftercare.
  2. Call the vet who treats your species around Zurich and ask if a necropsy would tell you anything.
  3. Keep the body chilled, not frozen, while you make up your mind about a necropsy.
  4. Wash your hands and any tools you used before returning to the rest of your animals.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: will my pet be cremated individually, how will a very small body be kept separate, and what, honestly, will come back?
  6. Confirm everything in writing and only then let your pet go.

Honoring a pet most people never got to meet

Zurich winters bring cold, grey days and occasional snow, and summers can be warm. In summer, lay your pet on a cool floor wrapped in a towel with cold packs, and contact your vet or a provider promptly. In winter, a cellar storage room can help for a short time, as long as the body is well wrapped. Burial in your own garden is only possible under certain conditions, so check first.

Questions people ask

Why does the Zurich page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) reports about 90%[1] of Switzerland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Zurich?

Usually yes. Zollikon is about 3 miles away, Kusnacht is about 4 miles away and Lucerne is about 25 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What if a crematory in Zurich refuses my species?

It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Kusnacht. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.

Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?

Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.

Should I choose a provider in Zurich or one further away?

Choose the one that's confident with your species. For small exotics, distance matters little: frozen or chilled in a cool box, your pet can travel an hour without any problem. A provider who has cremated hedgehogs or axolotls before, and tells you honestly what will return, is worth a drive.

Can I preserve my pet instead of cremating in Zurich?

Yes. Freeze-drying, taxidermy and resin work are offered in many countries, though often by only a handful of specialists. Freeze your pet promptly in a sealed bag, and don't book a cremation until you've decided, since preservation needs the whole body. Ask any studio for examples of the same species.
