Arranging exotic pet aftercare in Lucerne

Lucerne, Switzerland

Getting help with an unusual pet around Lucerne

Most people in Lucerne live in apartments, from old-town buildings on both banks of the Reuss to newer blocks in Kriens, Emmen and Horw, and plenty of households manage without a car. The old town is largely closed to traffic. If you need someone to come to you, tell them the floor, the lift situation and the nearest place a vehicle can pull in; if you prefer to go yourself, ask whether a taxi drop-off works.

Lucerne gets proper winters, with snow on the hills around the lake, and warm summers that occasionally bring a heatwave. When a pet dies in summer, move your animal to the coolest room, draw the blinds and pack frozen gel pads in a tea towel along the body. In winter a cellar storage room keeps things cool without any effort. Many vet practices here can hold a body for a short time.

If nobody within driving distance of Lucerne will cremate your species, ask a specialist provider further away whether they accept small pets by arrangement, frozen and sent in insulated packaging. Not every courier carries animal remains, so the provider should tell you which service to use and how to pack. It adds cost, but for a tiny exotic it can be the difference between an individual cremation and none.

Lucerne is home to about 82,000 people. The nearest larger centre is Zurich, about 25 miles (40 km) away, which is where some providers serving Lucerne are based.

Lucerne sits within easy reach of Kusnacht (23 miles), Zollikon (24 miles) and Zurich (25 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Lucerne; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation in Switzerland, and what it means for exotic pets

With cremation at roughly 90%[1] for people in Switzerland, pet providers here often sell bundles built around a cat or dog: a wooden urn, a paw print, a certificate. For an exotic pet, parts of that bundle may not fit. A glider's paw print is barely visible, and a standard urn dwarfs a hedgehog's remains. Ask whether you can drop the items you won't use and pay only for the cremation and a small container.

For the Switzerland figure we rely on bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Lucerne rather than as pet data.

Planning around the Lucerne weather when an exotic pet dies

Local weather affects two things for exotic pets: how fast a small body needs chilling, and how well your remaining animals' enclosures cope with heat or cold. If a death followed a power cut or a heating or cooling failure, tell your vet and check every other animal before you turn to aftercare.

How much to budget in Lucerne, from gliders to wallabies

Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight, so most exotic pets fall into the smallest band. A German consumer guide lists individual cremation at EUR 85-205 / EUR 165-375[5] (collective first, individual second), and an Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[6]. Ask Lucerne providers for the price for your pet's actual weight.

The full price table by size is on our Switzerland page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Switzerland expects after an exotic pet dies

You don't need a permit to have a hedgehog or sugar glider cremated in most places. But if your pet was a regulated species, if you want to keep parts such as a skull or quills, or if you plan to move remains across a state or national border, check first with the agency that issued your permit or with the national CITES authority. Burial rules for Switzerland are below.

What to do when your exotic pet dies in Lucerne

  1. For a large exotic kept outdoors, move other animals away first, then walk the enclosure or paddock looking for anything dangerous or any clue to the cause.
  2. Cover the body and keep it in shade, off the ground if you can, and out of reach of scavengers.
  3. Note the weight and full length, including tail. A provider uses both to work out what chamber and how much handling they'll need.
  4. Call providers used to giant-breed dogs or livestock first, and ask whether they collect, how many people they send and what access they need.
  5. Check your paperwork. If your animal was kept on a licence or permit, the conditions may say the issuing body has to be told when it dies.
  6. Arrange collection or delivery the same or next day; a body that size can't go in a household freezer.
  7. Ask what will come back. Unlike a glider, a large exotic returns a full urn's worth of remains, so choose the container to match.

Honoring a pet most people never got to meet

Pets in Lucerne share their outdoor hours with the lakeshore promenades, the meadows by the Musegg wall and the lower slopes of Pilatus and Rigi. When owners picture a pet afterward, it is often against that backdrop of water and peaks. Scattering in public places is regulated locally, so ask the Gemeinde before choosing a spot, and pick a sheltered place away from the shoreline.

Questions people ask

Why does the Lucerne page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) reports about 90%[1] of Switzerland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Will I have to travel to Zurich to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Zurich (roughly 25 miles from Lucerne) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lucerne?

Usually yes. Kusnacht is about 23 miles away, Zollikon is about 24 miles away and Zurich is about 25 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What size urn do I need for a hedgehog or sugar glider?

A very small one. Cremated remains usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 400 gram hedgehog leaves around a tablespoon and a glider only a few grams. A keepsake urn, locket or small pouch usually fits. Standard pet urns are designed for cats and dogs and will look almost empty.

Will a pet crematory in Lucerne cremate a hedgehog or sugar glider?

Most will, but not all have done it before. When you call, give the exact species and weight, and ask whether they cremate small animals individually, whether they use a tray to collect fine remains and how much ash they expect to return. A hedgehog usually leaves a tablespoon or two; a glider leaves a few grams.

Can I bury my exotic pet in the garden in Lucerne?

Rules differ across Europe; some countries allow burial on your own land with conditions such as minimum depth and distance from water. For amphibians and aquatic animals, bury well away from ponds and streams or choose cremation. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you take your pet with you.
