Oviedo, Asturias
Exotic pet aftercare in Oviedo: the local picture
Asturias has a mild, damp Atlantic climate, with frequent drizzle, green hills and cool summers compared with the rest of Spain. That gives you a little more time after a pet dies than in the hot south, but the body should still be kept cool: wrap your pet loosely in a towel, slide ice packs under the belly and behind the back, and keep the room cool and ventilated while you arrange collection.
Most people in Oviedo live in flats, from the older blocks around the historic center to newer buildings on the edges of the city, and many families don't rely on a car day to day. That makes collection from home an important option when a pet dies. When you ask for aftercare choices, tell us your street, floor and whether the building has a lift, so any collection can be planned around the stairs and narrow streets.
Keepers in Oviedo are more likely than big-city owners to have a garden, which makes home burial tempting for small pets. For mammals like hedgehogs, it's often fine where local rules allow. For amphibians and axolotls, think twice: diseases such as chytrid fungus spread through soil water and can reach wild frogs and salamanders. Cremation, or a burial far from ponds and drains, is the safer choice.
Oviedo is home to about 220,000 people.
Oviedo sits within easy reach of Santander (103 miles), Valladolid (131 miles) and Bilbao (147 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Oviedo; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
In Spain the split is roughly 50.11%[1] cremation for people, with most of the rest buried, so families here are often divided between burial and cremation traditions. That can surface even over a pet: one person wants the hedgehog in the garden, another wants ashes on the shelf. A middle path works well for small exotics. Cremate individually, then bury part of the remains in a planter or garden spot and keep the rest in a keepsake.
That Spain rate is a human one, published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). We quote it for Oviedo only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Oviedo weather, enclosures and timing
Local weather affects two things for exotic pets: how fast a small body needs chilling, and how well your remaining animals' enclosures cope with heat or cold. If a death followed a power cut or a heating or cooling failure, tell your vet and check every other animal before you turn to aftercare.

Prices for small and large exotics in Oviedo
Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight, so most exotic pets fall into the smallest band. A German consumer guide lists individual cremation at EUR 85-205 / EUR 165-375[5] (collective first, individual second), and an Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[6]. Ask Oviedo providers for the price for your pet's actual weight.

Rules and paperwork in Asturias
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Asturias are about burial and scattering.
The first day, step by step
- Note what happened. The time, the enclosure temperatures and any symptoms help if you later want a necropsy or a vet's view.
- Chill your pet in a sealed, labelled bag within an hour or two, sooner in hot weather.
- Choose your path: cremation on its own, a necropsy followed by cremation, preservation, or a burial if it's both legal and safe there.
- Find a provider who says yes clearly. Not sure what to ask? Try these questions to ask an exotic pet cremation provider.
- Check the container size. Most standard pet urns are far too big for a glider or hedgehog; a keepsake urn usually fits.
- Collect or receive the remains, then read the certificate and label to be sure the species is correct.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
In Oviedo, pets are very much part of city life, and many families keep a cat, rabbit or bird in a small flat. Garden burial isn't an option for most, and private cremation with ashes returned has become the usual choice. If you're not sure what to ask for, the main difference is between an individual cremation, where your pet's ashes come back to you, and a shared one, where they don't.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Oviedo?
Usually yes. Santander is about 103 miles away, Valladolid is about 131 miles away and Bilbao is about 147 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Spain?
For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Oviedo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Should I choose a provider in Oviedo or one further away?
Choose the one that's confident with your species. For small exotics, distance matters little: frozen or chilled in a cool box, your pet can travel an hour without any problem. A provider who has cremated hedgehogs or axolotls before, and tells you honestly what will return, is worth a drive.
My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?
Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.
Can someone collect my wallaby or other large exotic in Oviedo?
Some providers can, especially those that also handle large dogs or farm animals. Give the weight and the full length, including tail, so they can send enough people and check their chamber fits. If they can't collect, you may need to deliver by car or trailer. Ask about mileage if the provider is based near Oviedo.
How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Oviedo?
Providers price by weight, and almost every exotic pet falls into the smallest band, so expect a price close to a small cat's individual cremation in your country. Communal cremation is much cheaper. Ask Oviedo providers for their smallest-band price, whether collection is included and what container the remains come back in.
