What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
Cremation is by far the most common choice for people in Japan, at about 99.97%[1]. That familiarity tends to carry over to pets, including unusual ones. Keepers here are more likely to find that a crematory already offers keepsake-size urns, small-animal trays and individual certificates, all of which matter when the animal weighed less than a pound.

Before you bury or cremate: Shizuoka rules worth knowing
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Shizuoka are about burial and scattering.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, and exotic animals are common enough that one University of Tokyo study found they made up 20.5%[7] of its necropsy cases. Some species are banned under the Invasive Alien Species Act. For small pets, ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨), since some municipal routes don't return remains.
What to do when your exotic pet dies in Hamamatsu
- If you're away, ask your sitter to move your pet into a sealed bag and label it with the date and time they found them.
- Decide by phone: fridge or freezer. The fridge is right if you're home in a day or two and a necropsy is possible; the freezer if your trip runs longer.
- Have them check the enclosure: temperature, water and power. A photo of the thermostat reading helps later.
- Ask them to look at every other animal and to call your vet if any seem unwell.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hamamatsu?

Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
How long does exotic pet cremation take in a big city like Hamamatsu?
