What arranging exotic pet cremation in Dublin is like
Dublin's green spaces, from the Phoenix Park to the Bull Island strands, Sandymount and the Dublin Mountains, are part of how many families here spend time with their animals, and they often become part of how people say goodbye. Some families ask for ashes back so they can bring a small portion to a place that mattered, while others keep them at home. Ask any provider for written confirmation of whether the cremation is individual, and whether the ashes returned are only your pet's.
Dublin's weather is mild and damp for most of the year, with few hard frosts and rarely any real heat. That gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but a cool room and a sheet or blanket underneath are still wise. If your pet dies on a road or in a park, Dublin City Council's animal welfare team takes reports of animals found dead in public places through its online Citizen Hub, with details and the exact location.
Keepers in Dublin with larger collections, such as a breeding group of hedgehogs or a shelf of invertebrates, sometimes lose several animals within a few months. Rather than arranging each cremation separately, ask a provider whether they'll accept several frozen animals in one drop-off and still cremate each alone, or cremate them together with shared remains returned. Say clearly which you want; the price differs, and a group cremation can't be separated afterward.
Dublin's population is around 1,228,000.
Dublin sits within easy reach of Galway (116 miles) and Cork (137 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Dublin; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
26.56%[1]
In 2024, 26.56% of deaths in the Republic of Ireland were cremated (9,341 of 35,173; excludes one crematorium).
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
With about 26.56%[1] of people cremated, Ireland is a place where burial is common. That can mean fewer pet crematories nearby and even fewer that have handled an unusual species. Your exotics vet is the best starting point; if they can't help, a crematory in the nearest large city will often accept your pet if you deliver.
We take the Ireland rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Dublin, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Timing exotic pet aftercare in Dublin's climate
Local weather affects two things for exotic pets: how fast a small body needs chilling, and how well your remaining animals' enclosures cope with heat or cold. If a death followed a power cut or a heating or cooling failure, tell your vet and check every other animal before you turn to aftercare.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Dublin
Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight, so most exotic pets fall into the smallest band. A German consumer guide lists individual cremation at EUR 85-205 / EUR 165-375[5] (collective first, individual second), and an Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[6]. Ask Dublin providers for the price for your pet's actual weight.

Before you bury or cremate: Leinster rules worth knowing
Invasive-species laws are written for living animals, but the reasoning applies after a death too. Anything from an enclosure that could carry a non-native parasite, fungus or seed, such as substrate, tank water or live plants, shouldn't be dumped outdoors. Bag it for household waste, or ask your vet. The notes for Leinster below cover burial and scattering of your pet itself.
Dublin's own guidance is published by Dublin City Council Animal Welfare Unit; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation.
In Ireland, individual cremation for small pets is widely available; one crematorium lists prices from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg, which covers almost every exotic species kept here. If your pet was CITES-listed, keep its certificate with you when you arrange aftercare, and ask the provider what they expect to return for a very small animal.
Step by step in Dublin
- Make sure your other animals are safe. If heating, cooling or water was the cause, put that right before anything else.
- Wrap your pet in paper towel, then seal it in a bag, so fine fur, scales or skin stay together.
- Call your exotics vet for advice on a necropsy; it matters most when one animal in a colony has died for no obvious reason.
- Don't bury or dispose of an amphibian or aquatic pet near water, and don't pour tank water outside.
- Ask two providers for a written quote, giving species, weight and length for a larger animal.
- Arrange delivery or collection, keeping your pet chilled on the journey.
- Let yourself grieve. Caring for an unusual animal takes real knowledge and time, and that loss is real.
Keeping a small, special pet close
Dublin is a city of terraced houses, newer apartment blocks and long suburban estates stretching out toward Fingal and the mountains, and many homes have only a small back garden. That matters because garden burial, long the Irish default for a family pet, is not realistic for everyone. Cremation has become a common choice for pets even though most Irish families still bury their human dead, and home collection is usually what Dublin owners ask for first.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dublin?
Usually yes. Galway is about 116 miles away and Cork is about 137 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Dublin page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) reports about 26.56%[1] of Ireland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What if a crematory in Dublin refuses my species?
It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Leinster. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.
Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?
Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
Where can I get a necropsy for an exotic pet near Dublin?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in a city like Dublin often do necropsies in-house or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Refrigerate, don't freeze, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing and ask the vet to release your pet to your chosen crematory afterwards.
Will a pet crematory in Dublin cremate a hedgehog or sugar glider?
Most will, but not all have done it before. When you call, give the exact species and weight, and ask whether they cremate small animals individually, whether they use a tray to collect fine remains and how much ash they expect to return. A hedgehog usually leaves a tablespoon or two; a glider leaves a few grams.
