How Germany thinks about cremation
Cremation is the norm for people in Germany: about 76.0%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That usually means well-established pet crematories and staff who are comfortable talking about ashes. It doesn't guarantee they've handled a glider or a spider, though. A high local cremation rate makes it more likely you'll find a provider nearby; the species question still has to be asked directly.

What Saxony rules mean for an exotic pet
Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in Saxony. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.
In Germany, home burial of a small pet is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover and outside water-protection areas. Keepers of some protected species must register them with the local authority and report when the animal dies, so check your records. Ask the Tierkrematorium whether individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung) is possible for a very small animal.
From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Dresden
- For a large exotic kept outdoors, move other animals away first, then walk the enclosure or paddock looking for anything dangerous or any clue to the cause.
- Cover the body and keep it in shade, raised off the ground where possible, somewhere scavengers can't get to it.
- Note the weight and full length, including tail. A provider uses both to work out what chamber and how much handling they'll need.
- Call providers used to giant-breed dogs or livestock first, and ask whether they collect, how many people they send and what access they need.
- Check your paperwork. If your animal was kept on a licence or permit, the conditions may say the issuing body has to be told when it dies.
- Arrange collection or delivery the same or next day; a body that size can't go in a household freezer.
- Ask what will come back. A big animal leaves a full urn's worth, nothing like a glider, so pick a container sized for that.
