Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia
Getting help with an unusual pet around Dortmund
The Ruhr's climate is mild and damp, with grey winters and summers that now bring hotter spells than they used to. In warm weather, wrap your pet in a towel, put cool packs against the body and keep the room shaded and cool. In winter you usually have more time, but choosing between cremation, a pet cemetery or a garden burial within a day or two keeps things calm.
Dortmund has turned old industrial sites into green space, most famously the lake at Phoenix-See where a steelworks once stood, and the Westfalenpark and Rombergpark are close to many homes. In Germany, pet cremation and pet cemeteries are both well established. Burying a small pet in your own garden is sometimes possible, but rules depend on the local authority and water protection zones, so check with the city first.
Apartment keepers in Dortmund often have no garden at all, which takes home burial off the table and makes cremation the natural choice. Small exotics are easy to transport yourself in a cool box with an ice pack, so you don't always need a collection service. For a skunk, a large tortoise-sized animal or a wallaby, ask about collection with a stretcher and check your building's service lift before the team arrives.
Dortmund is home to about 588,000 people, the 3rd-largest of the 6 North Rhine-Westphalia communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Essen (20 miles), Munster (32 miles) and Dusseldorf (36 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Dortmund routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
76.0%[1]
In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
In Germany, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, families rarely feel they have to justify wanting ashes back, even for a hedgehog. Competition between providers also helps exotic keepers: a crematory that wants the business is more likely to try a small-animal tray or talk you through what will realistically remain.
That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Dortmund only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Dortmund weather, enclosures and timing
Weather doesn't affect the ashes themselves. Cremated remains can be posted or collected in any season, and they don't need special storage. If you plan to carry them on a flight or across a border later, keep the certificate with the urn and check the carrier's rules first.

Prices for small and large exotics in Dortmund
In parts of Europe, pet insurance can help: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement of cremation costs[5]. Cover elsewhere is patchier, and exotic species are often excluded. Before you accept a quote in Dortmund, check any policy you hold, and ask the crematorium for the smallest-band price with and without collection from your vet.

What North Rhine-Westphalia rules mean for an exotic pet
Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in North Rhine-Westphalia. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.
In Germany, home burial of a small pet is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover and outside water-protection areas. Keepers of some protected species must register them with the local authority and report when the animal dies, so check your records. Ask the Tierkrematorium whether individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung) is possible for a very small animal.
What to do next, in order
- Take a breath. A small exotic in a sealed bag in the freezer is safe for weeks. Nothing has to be decided tonight.
- Keep anything you'd like to hold on to now: a shed molt, a few quills, a tuft of fur, a feather or a photo of them in their enclosure.
- Think about preservation before cremation. Freeze-drying, resin or taxidermy all need the whole body, and none can happen after cremation.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your vet, or just send us your pet's details instead and we'll find out who accepts your species.
- Choose individual or communal, remembering that a tiny animal can leave almost no ash, or none at all.
- Decide where the remains will go: into a pendant, a keepsake urn, a planter, or a small grave somewhere burial is permitted.
Remembering your exotic pet in Dortmund
Dortmund's pets live everywhere from the dense apartment streets around the Nordstadt to the miners' cottage settlements and semi-detached houses of the outer districts. If you live in an older block without a lift, or rely on the U-Bahn rather than a car, getting your pet to a vet or crematorium can be hard. Say which district you are in, which floor, and where a van could pull up; most regional providers will come to the door.

If you live between Dortmund and Essen, Bonn, Cologne and Dusseldorf, either page applies. Every other community in North Rhine-Westphalia, and all of Germany, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Dortmund follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Dortmund?
The closest communities we cover are Essen (about 20 miles), Munster (about 32 miles) and Dusseldorf (about 36 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Dortmund too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I preserve my pet instead of cremating in Dortmund?
Yes. Freeze-drying, taxidermy and resin work are offered in many countries, though often by only a handful of specialists. Freeze your pet promptly in a sealed bag, and don't book a cremation until you've decided, since preservation needs the whole body. Ask any studio for examples of the same species.
Should I put my exotic pet in the fridge or the freezer?
It depends on what you want next. For a necropsy (an animal post-mortem), refrigerate and get to the vet within a day or two, because freezing damages tissue. For freeze-drying or taxidermy, freeze promptly. For cremation only, either works; the freezer gives you more time to find the right provider in Dortmund.
Can I bury my exotic pet in the garden in Dortmund?
Rules differ across Europe; some countries allow burial on your own land with conditions such as minimum depth and distance from water. For amphibians and aquatic animals, bury well away from ponds and streams or choose cremation. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you take your pet with you.
Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?
Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
