Hedgehogs, gliders, axolotls and more: cremation in Bremen

Bremen, Germany

Who handles exotic species near Bremen, and how to reach them

The Bürgerpark, the Weser riverbanks and the flat, open Blockland meadows north of the city are where many Bremen families spend time outdoors. In Germany, pet cremation and pet cemeteries are both well established. Burying a small pet in your own garden may be allowed, but rules depend on local authorities and groundwater, which is often high in Bremen's low-lying land.

Bremen's climate is maritime and changeable, with mild, wet winters, frequent wind off the North Sea and summers that are rarely very hot. In most seasons you have some time to decide, as long as your pet is wrapped in a towel in the coolest room. During a summer heat spell, add cool packs and move faster. Storm surges on the Weser rarely affect homes, but gales can slow traffic for a few hours.

Necropsy is easier to arrange in a big city like Bremen. Exotics practices here can often do a post-mortem in-house or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, and some will then pass your pet straight to a crematory. If you keep a colony of sugar gliders or several hedgehogs, knowing why one died can protect the rest, so it's worth deciding on a necropsy before anything else happens.

Bremen is home to about 569,000 people.

Bremen sits within easy reach of Hamburg (59 miles, a larger centre), Hanover (62 miles) and Munster (92 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Bremen; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

76.0%[1]

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider

In Germany, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, families rarely feel they have to justify wanting ashes back, even for a hedgehog. Competition between providers also helps exotic keepers: a crematory that wants the business is more likely to try a small-animal tray or talk you through what will realistically remain.

For the Germany figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bremen rather than as pet data.

Bremen weather, enclosures and timing

If you're planning to bury your pet or their ashes in Bremen, the season matters: frozen ground in winter, dry ground in summer. For amphibians and aquatic pets, choose a spot far from water or choose cremation, because some amphibian diseases spread through water to wild animals.

Prices for small and large exotics in Bremen

In Bremen, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and arranges collection by a pet crematorium. For an exotic pet, ask whether individual (rather than collective) cremation is possible for a very small animal and what they expect to return. Prices depend on the country and the provider, as the table shows.

The Germany price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Permits, protected species and burial in Germany

A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Germany are about burial and scattering.

In Germany, home burial of a small pet is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover and outside water-protection areas. Keepers of some protected species must register them with the local authority and report when the animal dies, so check your records. Ask the Tierkrematorium whether individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung) is possible for a very small animal.

From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Bremen

  1. Check that they've really died. Some exotics look lifeless when they aren't: a cold hedgehog attempting hibernation or a tarantula lying on its back to molt. If you're unsure, warm gently and call an exotics vet.
  2. Decide what you want first: a necropsy (post-mortem), preservation or cremation only. This decides how you store the body.
  3. Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Note the date, the weight and what species they are. Don't add tank water for a frog or newt.
  4. Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation; if it's cremation only, either works. When a necropsy matters, try to get to the vet inside a day or two.
  5. Gather paperwork: any permit, CITES certificate, breeder or purchase record.
  6. Call a provider with the species and weight, then ask two things: have they cremated one before, and what exactly comes back to you.
  7. Get the price in writing, including collection, the container and any certificate.

Honoring a pet most people never got to meet

Many Bremen pets live in the Bremer Haus, the narrow brick terraced houses of the Viertel, Schwachhausen and Findorff, with steep inner stairs and small back gardens. Others live in apartment blocks in the outer districts. If you do not drive, getting your pet to a vet or crematorium can be difficult, so ask about home collection and mention your street and any stairs.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bremen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bremen?

Usually yes. Hamburg is about 59 miles away, Hanover is about 62 miles away and Munster is about 92 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?

Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.

Can someone collect my exotic pet from home in Bremen?

Many Bremen crematories offer home collection, but for a small exotic it's often simpler to deliver your pet yourself in a cool box, or leave them at your vet for the next collection round. For a large animal like a wallaby, ask for collection with a stretcher and tell them about stairs or lifts.

How do I know I got my own pet's ashes back?

Ask how the provider keeps track of each animal. Reliable providers attach an ID disc that stays with your pet from intake to return, use a separate chamber or tray for individual cremations, and record each step. For a tiny exotic, check that only one animal is cremated at a time. A certificate that names the species and weight, not just 'pet', is another good sign.

Is exotic pet cremation common in Germany?

For people, about 76.0%[1] of deaths in Germany end in cremation, which means crematories are familiar and generally easy to find. Exotic pets are a small share of any crematory's work, though, so experience with your species still varies provider by provider. Asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
