With about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany choosing cremation, the idea of bringing ashes home is everyday here. For exotic pets, the more useful local question is who has done it before. Exotics vets, keeper groups and breeders are the quickest way to find the provider that treats a 100 gram animal with the same care as a 100 lb dog.
The Germany figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons in Freiburg and the first hours after a loss

Rules and paperwork in Baden-Wurttemberg
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Baden-Wurttemberg are about burial and scattering.
In Germany, home burial of a small pet is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover and outside water-protection areas. Keepers of some protected species must register them with the local authority and report when the animal dies, so check your records. Ask the Tierkrematorium whether individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung) is possible for a very small animal.

Can I bury my exotic pet in the garden in Freiburg?
