Exotic Pet Cremation in Prague

Exotic Pet Cremation in Prague: what to know

Which exotic animals you may legally keep can change within Prague, not just at its borders, with some towns and cities stricter than the region as a whole. After a death, that matters mainly for paperwork: if your pet needed a permit, bring it along when you hand them to a provider. Cremation itself works the same way for a legal hedgehog as for a cat.

If you're planning ahead in Prague, perhaps for an older hedgehog or a glider colony, three calls now save a hard day later: your exotics vet, one crematory that confirms it takes your species, and a backup in case the first is closed. Note each one's hours and whether they'll accept a frozen pet. Our pre-planning notes for exotic pets cover what else to write down.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet

In Prague, about 85.64%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, families rarely feel they have to justify wanting ashes back, even for a hedgehog. Competition between providers also helps exotic keepers: a crematory that wants the business is more likely to try a small-animal tray or talk you through what will realistically remain.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Prague rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

How much to budget in Prague, from gliders to wallabies

In parts of Europe, pet insurance can help: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement of cremation costs[2]. Cover elsewhere is patchier, and exotic species are often excluded. Before you accept a quote in Prague, check any policy you hold, and ask the crematorium for the smallest-band price with and without collection from your vet.

In Prague, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and arranges collection by a pet crematorium. For an exotic pet, ask whether individual (rather than collective) cremation is possible for a very small animal and what they expect to return. Prices depend on the country and the provider, as the table shows.

Rules and paperwork in Prague

Never flush a dead axolotl, frog, fish or invertebrate, and never empty its tank water into a garden, pond or storm drain. Amphibian chytrid fungus and other diseases spread this way, and released animals, even dead ones, can carry invasive organisms. Beyond that common-sense rule, here is what Prague says about burial and scattering.

From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Prague

  1. For a large exotic kept outdoors, move other animals away first and check the paddock or enclosure for hazards or signs of what happened.
  2. Cover the body and keep it in shade, off the ground if you can, and out of reach of scavengers.
  3. Note the weight and full length, including tail. A provider uses both to work out what chamber and how much handling they'll need.
  4. Call providers used to giant-breed dogs or livestock first, and ask whether they collect, how many people they send and what access they need.
  5. Check your paperwork. If your animal was kept on a licence or permit, the conditions may say the issuing body has to be told when it dies.
  6. Arrange collection or delivery the same or next day; a body that size can't go in a household freezer.
  7. Ask what will come back. A big animal leaves a full urn's worth, nothing like a glider, so pick a container sized for that.

Memorials that suit an unusual companion

If your pet was preserved rather than cremated, a freeze-dried hedgehog or a resin-set spider becomes its own memorial. If they were cremated, you might keep the certificate naming the species alongside a favourite photo. Our resin and display memorials guide covers options that work for very small animals.

Questions people ask

Can I travel with my pet's body to a crematory elsewhere in Prague?

For common species, yes. Seal your pet in a labelled bag and pack it in a cool box with ice packs. For regulated or protected species, carry your permit and check whether moving the body needs approval. Larger exotics may need a provider who collects.

Do I need to report an exotic pet's death in Prague?

For most unregulated species, no. If your pet was kept under a permit or licence, or is a protected species with registration papers, the conditions may require you to report the death. Check your paperwork or ask the agency that issued it.

Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?

For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.

How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Prague?

Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so they cost about the same as a small cat, even if they weigh a few ounces. Large exotics like wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, certificates and keepsake urns add to the total. Ask for an itemised written quote.

Are there exotics vets outside the big cities in Prague?

Some, but they're thinly spread. Many general practices see the odd hedgehog or reptile, and a few have a vet with a special interest in exotics. For necropsy or specialist advice, keepers in smaller places often travel to Prague. It's worth finding your nearest exotics vet while your animals are well, and asking which crematory they use.

What will come back after cremating a very small pet?

Cremated remains are mostly bone and usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4]. A hedgehog leaves about a tablespoon, a sugar glider a few grams, an axolotl perhaps a gram, and a tarantula usually nothing. Ask the provider honestly before you book.
