What arranging exotic pet cremation in Kelowna is like
Many Kelowna residents live in condos or strata homes with rules about gardens, and even houses may have rocky or sloping lots. Private cremation gives you your pet's ashes, with no deadline on what you do with them. Communal cremation is the budget option, and no ashes come home. If you'd like to scatter ashes on the lake or in a park, check the rules for that place first.
Kelowna summers are hot and dry, and wildfire smoke has become a regular part of many seasons, while winters are cool with valley cloud and some snow. In summer heat, act quickly: wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs around the body and keep it in the coolest room. During fire evacuations or road closures, ask your vet about cold storage.
Local crematories in Kelowna tend to know their vets well, which helps when the species is unusual. A vet who can say 'this is a 150 gram glider, the family wants individual cremation and any ash returned' gets a more careful answer than a cold call. Ask your vet to make that first call for you if you'd rather not explain the species yourself.
Kelowna is home to about 144,000 people, the 3rd-largest of the 6 British Columbia communities we cover.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets
In British Columbia, about 87%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, families rarely feel they have to justify wanting ashes back, even for a hedgehog. Competition between providers also helps exotic keepers: a crematory that wants the business is more likely to try a small-animal tray or talk you through what will realistically remain.
The British Columbia figure comes from DFS Memorials 'Cremation Nation' (estimate citing CANA) (2025). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing exotic pet aftercare in Kelowna's climate
Your provider in Kelowna will know the local seasons, so ask what they'd recommend right now. In the meantime, a freezer keeps a small exotic safely for weeks, which means the weather never has to force a decision you're not ready to make.

How much to budget in Kelowna, from gliders to wallabies
Canadian providers price by weight, and nearly every small exotic falls into the lowest band. One British Columbia crematorium lists private cremation at about CAD 195 for pets up to 20 lb[5], while an Ontario provider lists CAD 449 private and CAD 199 communal for pets under 25 lb[6]. Kelowna prices will vary, so ask for a written quote in CAD.

Before you bury or cremate: British Columbia rules worth knowing
Most of the decisions after an exotic pet dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, which British Columbia and your local authority may regulate, and paperwork for species that were permitted, licensed or protected. Keep any permit, purchase record or CITES certificate together before you call a provider; our notes on disclosure for unusual companions explain what they may ask.
Across Canada, which exotic species may be kept is set by provinces and often by cities, and some municipalities ban animals that are legal a few kilometres away. If your pet was held under a permit, check whether you need to report the death. Winter matters too: frozen ground makes home burial impractical for months, so many keepers freeze or cremate and wait for spring.
For British Columbia's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the British Columbia guide. Local rules in Kelowna can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do next, in order
- Move your pet out of the enclosure into a clean, sealed bag. Leave heating and lighting running for any tank-mates.
- Label the bag with the species, weight, date and your name.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, say so to the vet before you book any cremation, because tests might have to come first.
- Store the body: fridge for a necropsy within a day or two, freezer for anything longer.
- Check your paperwork where a permit or CITES record applied to the species, and find out if the death has to be reported.
- Book the cremation when you have a provider who knows the species well, and request a certificate that states what they were.
Remembering your exotic pet in Kelowna
Kelowna stretches along the east side of Okanagan Lake, with condos downtown, suburbs climbing the hillsides and rural properties out towards Lake Country and the benchlands. Hillside homes can mean steep driveways and winding roads. When you ask for options, include your neighbourhood, whether your pet is at home or at the vet, and any access issues, especially in winter.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in British Columbia?
For people, yes: about 87%[1] of British Columbia deaths end in cremation, according to DFS Memorials 'Cremation Nation' (estimate citing CANA) (2025). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kelowna follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can someone collect my wallaby or other large exotic in Kelowna?
Some providers can, especially those that also handle large dogs or farm animals. Give the weight and the full length, including tail, so they can send enough people and check their chamber fits. If they can't collect, you may need to deliver by car or trailer. Ask about mileage if the provider is based near Kelowna.
Where can I get a necropsy for an exotic pet near Kelowna?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in a city like Kelowna often do necropsies in-house or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Refrigerate, don't freeze, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing and ask the vet to release your pet to your chosen crematory afterwards.
What size urn do I need for a hedgehog or sugar glider?
A very small one. Cremated remains usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 400 gram hedgehog leaves around a tablespoon and a glider only a few grams. A keepsake urn, locket or small pouch usually fits. Standard pet urns are designed for cats and dogs and will look almost empty.
Is it safe to bury an axolotl or amphibian in my garden in Kelowna?
It can be, where local rules allow, but bury well away from ponds, streams, ditches and drains. Amphibian diseases such as chytrid fungus spread through water and can harm wild frogs and salamanders. Never flush an amphibian or pour its tank water outside. Cremation removes the risk entirely, even if little ash comes back.
Should I put my exotic pet in the fridge or the freezer?
It depends on what you want next. For a necropsy (an animal post-mortem), refrigerate and get to the vet within a day or two, because freezing damages tissue. For freeze-drying or taxidermy, freeze promptly. For cremation only, either works; the freezer gives you more time to find the right provider in Kelowna.
