Exotic Pet Cremation in Seoul: what to know
Exotic pet cremation across Seoul depends less on the rules and more on who has done it before. In the larger cities, such as Seoul and Gangnam, you'll usually find an exotics vet and at least one crematory used to small or unusual animals. In smaller towns, the local vet may never have arranged cremation for a hedgehog or axolotl, and your pet may travel to a regional provider.
If you keep an unusual pet in Seoul, three things shape the aftercare: how far you are from a vet who treats your species, whether you want a necropsy or preservation (which decides fridge or freezer), and whether your species needed a permit. This page covers the regional picture; each city page goes into local pickup, prices and weather.

How Seoul thinks about cremation
Where cremation is as routine as it is in Seoul (roughly 92.43%[1] of human funerals), pet crematories are more likely to have a viewing room or let you be present as the cremation starts. Keepers of unusual pets often find this reassuring, because it removes any doubt about whether a tiny animal was handled on its own. If you'd like to attend, ask when you book, since it usually needs a set appointment.
The cremation figure for Seoul comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seoul prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip
Many cities in the region offer a low-cost municipal collection for dead pets, but remains are rarely returned. In Tokyo, by our estimate, a private-sector communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times[2] the ward's collection fee. If you want your exotic pet's remains back from a provider near Seoul, you need an individual service; confirm that in writing.
Pet funeral customs in much of Asia are well established, and small pets are often priced in the lowest band with a short ceremony included. In Tokyo, one pet memorial park charges JPY 14,300 / JPY 22,000[3] for communal and individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg. In Hong Kong, a provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[4].
| Place | Communal | Individual |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 | JPY 22,000 |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | n/a | HKD 1,300 |
| Singapore (cat under 5 kg) | SGD 160 | SGD 280 |

Before you bury or cremate: Seoul rules worth knowing
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Seoul are about burial and scattering.
Step by step in Seoul
- Move your pet out of the enclosure and into a clean bag that seals. If anyone else lives in that tank, keep the lights and heat on for them.
- Label the bag with the species, weight, date and your name.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, say so to the vet before you book any cremation, because tests might have to come first.
- Store the body: fridge for a necropsy within a day or two, freezer for anything longer.
- Check your paperwork if the species needed a permit or CITES records, and whether you need to report the death.
- Book the cremation when you have a provider who knows the species well, and request a certificate that states what they were.
Keepsakes and tributes for an exotic pet in Seoul
Keeper communities often remember animals together. Breeders' groups, exotic pet forums and local shows are places where people will understand why a 400 gram hedgehog mattered so much. Sharing their story there can help, and it may help another keeper spot an illness sooner.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in Seoul?
We currently have local exotic pet cremation guides for 2 communities in Seoul, including Seoul and Gangnam. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how to find a provider who handles unusual species.
What should I bring when I drop my pet at a crematory in Seoul?
Your pet, sealed in a labelled bag and kept cool in a cool box; any permit or certificate if the species is regulated; and a note of what you want: individual or communal, the container, and whether you'd like a keepsake such as some fur or an ink print. Ask for a signed form and a date when the remains will be ready.
Is cremation common in Seoul?
For people, about 92.43%[1] of deaths in Seoul end in cremation, which gives a sense of how established cremation is locally. It says less about exotic pets: experience with unusual species varies from provider to provider, so asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
Where can I get a necropsy for my exotic pet in Seoul?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in the larger cities often perform necropsies or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing.
Are there exotics vets outside the big cities in Seoul?
Some, but they're thinly spread. Many general practices see the odd hedgehog or reptile, and a few have a vet with a special interest in exotics. For necropsy or specialist advice, keepers in smaller places often travel to Seoul and Gangnam. It's worth finding your nearest exotics vet while your animals are well, and asking which crematory they use.
Can I bury an exotic pet at home in Seoul?
Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.
