Exotic Pet Cremation in Auckland: what to know
Most crematories in Auckland are built around dogs and cats, and exotic pets are a small share of their work. That's why keepers here often hear hesitation on the first call. Naming the species and weight, and asking whether the provider has handled something similar, turns a vague 'maybe' into a clear answer.
If you keep an unusual pet in Auckland, three things shape the aftercare: how far you are from a vet who treats your species, whether you want a necropsy or preservation (which decides fridge or freezer), and whether your species needed a permit. This page covers the regional picture; each city page goes into local pickup, prices and weather.

How Auckland thinks about cremation
In Auckland the split is roughly 69%[1] cremation for people, with most of the rest buried, so families here are often divided between burial and cremation traditions. That can surface even over a pet: one person wants the hedgehog in the garden, another wants ashes on the shelf. A middle path works well for small exotics. Cremate individually, then bury part of the remains in a planter or garden spot and keep the rest in a keepsake.
The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023) publishes the Auckland rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Prices for small and large exotics in Auckland
Summer heat in much of Australia and New Zealand makes prompt chilling important for small bodies, but a freezer gives you time to compare. Ask two Auckland providers for their smallest-band price, whether they'll handle your species individually and whether collection from your vet is included.
In Australia, a provider survey of listed prices puts the median individual cremation at about AUD 412 median[2] for pets up to 5 kg, which covers almost every exotic pet kept there. Communal cremation starts from AUD 80[3]. In New Zealand, one Auckland provider lists individual cremation at NZD 305 for a 2 to 7 kg pet[4].
| What's published | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Australia, individual, pets up to 5 kg (median) | AUD 412 median[2] | Range AUD 295 to 612 |
| Australia, communal | from AUD 80[3] | No remains returned |
| RSPCA Queensland memorial packages | from AUD 250 | Individual cremation |

Before you bury or cremate: Auckland rules worth knowing
If you rent in Auckland, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.
New Zealand's biosecurity rules are among the strictest anywhere, and relatively few exotic species are kept. Axolotls and invertebrates are among the most common unusual pets. Never release a dead aquatic animal or its tank water into a stream or drain. Councils set home burial rules; ask your vet which crematorium will take very small animals individually.
A practical checklist for Auckland keepers
- Tell your child simply and honestly that their pet has died. Avoid 'went to sleep', which can make bedtime frightening.
- Offer a chance to say goodbye, should they want it. Wrapped in something soft, a small animal looks calm and at rest.
- Seal and chill the body afterwards, labelled with the name your child used.
- Let them help choose between cremation and a safe burial spot, and pick a small container or keepsake.
- Ask the provider whether a drawing or short letter can go with their pet. A small piece of paper is usually fine with most.
- Explain how long it will take before the remains are back, and circle that date on a calendar together.
- Keep routines steady, and be ready to talk about their pet as often as they need to.
Remembering your exotic pet in Auckland
A memorial doesn't have to involve ashes at all. Some keepers in Auckland plant native wildflowers for pollinators after losing an invertebrate, or install a small frog-friendly pond (without releasing anything) after losing an amphibian. A living memorial that helps wild relatives can feel especially fitting.

Questions people ask
Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?
For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.
How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in Auckland?
By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[6], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Can I bury an exotic pet at home in Auckland?
Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.
What should I bring when I drop my pet at a crematory in Auckland?
Your pet, sealed in a labelled bag and kept cool in a cool box; any permit or certificate if the species is regulated; and a note of what you want: individual or communal, the container, and whether you'd like a keepsake such as some fur or an ink print. Ask for a signed form and a date when the remains will be ready.
Can I travel with my pet's body to a crematory elsewhere in Auckland?
For common species, yes. Seal your pet in a labelled bag and pack it in a cool box with ice packs. For regulated or protected species, carry your permit and check whether moving the body needs approval. Larger exotics may need a provider who collects.
Is water cremation available for pets in Auckland?
In some places. Pet aquamation has spread faster than human water cremation and tends to be offered near larger cities. It can return a little more bone material, which helps with very small animals. Ask providers directly or mention it when you send us your request.
