Life in Sendai moves between the Hirose riverbanks, the slopes of Aobayama and the parks along the city's broad avenues, and many families remember a pet through the seasons they shared in a particular home. Cremation habits in Japan, and what they mean for keepers
Cremation is the norm for people in Japan: about 99.97%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That usually means well-established pet crematories and staff who are comfortable talking about ashes. It doesn't guarantee they've handled a glider or a spider, though. A high local cremation rate makes it more likely you'll find a provider nearby; the species question still has to be asked directly.

Before you bury or cremate: Miyagi rules worth knowing
You don't need a permit to have a hedgehog or sugar glider cremated in most places. But if your pet was a regulated species, if you want to keep parts such as a skull or quills, or if you plan to move remains across a state or national border, check first with the agency that issued your permit or with the national CITES authority. Burial rules for Miyagi are below.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, and exotic animals are common enough that one University of Tokyo study found they made up 20.5%[6] of its necropsy cases. Some species are banned under the Invasive Alien Species Act. For small pets, ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨), since some municipal routes don't return remains.
From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Sendai
- If you're away, ask your sitter to move your pet into a sealed bag, writing on it the date and time they were found.
- Decide by phone: fridge or freezer. The fridge is right if you're home in a day or two and a necropsy is possible; the freezer if your trip runs longer.
- Have them check the enclosure: power, water and temperature. A photo of the thermostat can help later.
- Ask them to look at every other animal and to call your vet if any seem unwell.
- Leave aftercare decisions until you're home unless there's a health reason to hurry. A frozen small pet can wait.
- Once you're home, call a provider, describe the animal and its size, and book drop-off or collection.
Ways to remember them that fit the species
Sendai's winters are cold for the Pacific side of Japan, with occasional snow, while summers are warm and humid, and the rainy season brings heavy showers. If your pet dies in summer, keep the body cool with wrapped ice packs and arrange cremation within a day or two. In winter you may have a little more time, but careful preparation still matters.

Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Sendai follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is it safe to bury an axolotl or amphibian in my garden in Sendai?
It can be, where local rules allow, but bury well away from ponds, streams, ditches and drains. Amphibian diseases such as chytrid fungus spread through water and can harm wild frogs and salamanders. Never flush an amphibian or pour its tank water outside. Cremation removes the risk entirely, even if little ash comes back.
My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?
Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.
Will a pet crematory in Sendai cremate a hedgehog or sugar glider?
Most will, but not all have done it before. When you call, give the exact species and weight, and ask whether they cremate small animals individually, whether they use a tray to collect fine remains and how much ash they expect to return. A hedgehog usually leaves a tablespoon or two; a glider leaves a few grams.
How long does exotic pet cremation take in a big city like Sendai?
The cremation itself is quick for a small animal, but the whole process, from collection to getting remains back, is often about one to two weeks. Providers in Sendai with frequent collection rounds may be faster. If you want your pet back quickly, ask whether the provider offers a priority return.
How much ash will my axolotl or frog leave?
Very little. Amphibians are mostly water and have light skeletons, so a large axolotl may leave a gram or two and a small frog possibly nothing visible. Many keepers still choose individual cremation because it means their animal was treated alone and with care. Ask the provider in advance so you know what to expect.
