Como, Lombardy
How exotic pet cremation works around Como
The lakeside promenade out toward Villa Olmo, the gardens along the shore and the paths above town at Brunate, a short ride up by funicular, are where many Como pets spent their days. Owners often think of the view across the water to the mountains when they picture their animal. The comune and private landowners each have their own view on scattering ashes, so ask before choosing a place.
Como is humid for much of the year, with foggy, damp winters in the lowlands and hot summers broken by violent thunderstorms. If your pet dies on a warm afternoon, close the shutters, set your animal on a folded towel on cool tiles and wrap frozen packs in a cloth around the body. From November to March an unheated room does the same job. Many vets can also hold a body briefly.
Around Como, it's common for a family to handle the goodbye locally and the cremation regionally: the vet confirms the death and holds the body, and a crematory near Milan collects on its next run. That works well for exotics too, as long as the paperwork follows your pet. Write the species, weight and 'individual cremation' on the bag label as well as the form.
Como's population is around 84,000, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Lombardy communities we cover. Milan, roughly 24 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Como run from there.
Como sits within easy reach of Milan (24 miles, a larger centre), Turin (85 miles, a larger centre) and Verona (96 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Como; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation in Italy, and what it means for exotic pets
About 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, so many local families bury rather than cremate, pets included. For an unusual pet, that's a reasonable choice where it's safe. Where it isn't, because the animal was aquatic, carried a disease or you rent, cremation keeps things simple and lets your pet move with you if you ever leave.
That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Como only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What the Como seasons mean for exotic pets and aftercare
Local weather affects two things for exotic pets: how fast a small body needs chilling, and how well your remaining animals' enclosures cope with heat or cold. If a death followed a power cut or a heating or cooling failure, tell your vet and check every other animal before you turn to aftercare.

Prices for small and large exotics in Como
Ashes can take longer to come back than keepers expect; one Swedish vet group says two to four weeks is normal[5]. For a very small exotic, the wait is the same as for a large dog, because remains follow the crematorium's schedule, not the pet's size. Ask Como providers for a return date and whether a faster return costs extra.

Before you bury or cremate: Lombardy rules worth knowing
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Lombardy are about burial and scattering.
From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Como
- Move your pet out of the enclosure and into a clean bag that seals. If anyone else lives in that tank, keep the lights and heat on for them.
- Label the bag with the species, weight, date and your name.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, say so to the vet before you book any cremation, because tests might have to come first.
- Store the body: fridge for a necropsy within a day or two, freezer for anything longer.
- Check your paperwork where a permit or CITES record applied to the species, and find out if the death has to be reported.
- Book the cremation when you have a provider who knows the species well, and request a certificate that states what they were.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
Como's old centre sits inside its medieval walls at the southern tip of the lake, with flats above shops, narrow lanes and almost nowhere to stop a car. Newer homes climb toward Brunate and string out along the shore roads. If someone is coming to your home, tell them the street, the floor and whether the building has a lift, and warn them about the limited-traffic zone, which fines vehicles without a permit.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Como follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Como?
The closest communities we cover are Milan (about 24 miles), Turin (about 85 miles) and Verona (about 96 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Como too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Milan to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Milan (roughly 24 miles from Como) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Should I choose a provider in Como or one further away?
Choose the one that's confident with your species. For small exotics, distance matters little: frozen or chilled in a cool box, your pet can travel an hour without any problem. A provider who has cremated hedgehogs or axolotls before, and tells you honestly what will return, is worth a drive.
Is exotic pet cremation common in Italy?
For people, about 38.16%[1] of deaths in Italy end in cremation, which means crematories are familiar and generally easy to find. Exotic pets are a small share of any crematory's work, though, so experience with your species still varies provider by provider. Asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
Can someone collect my wallaby or other large exotic in Como?
Some providers can, especially those that also handle large dogs or farm animals. Give the weight and the full length, including tail, so they can send enough people and check their chamber fits. If they can't collect, you may need to deliver by car or trailer. Ask about mileage if the provider is based near Milan.
