Hedgehogs, gliders, axolotls and more: cremation in Vienna
Keepers of unusual pets in Vienna often hear 'we don't do those' first. Here's how to find a yes, what it should cost and what will realistically come home.

Vienna, Austria
What arranging exotic pet cremation in Vienna is like
Vienna has hot summers and cold, grey winters, so how quickly you need to act depends on the season. In July, keep your pet in the coolest room with a cool pack under a towel; in January, a cool hallway may be enough for a short time. Old apartment buildings rarely have a garden of their own, and burial in the courtyard is not an option, which is one reason cremation is the usual choice in the city.
Vienna is famous for its relationship with death and for taking funerals seriously, and that shows in how many residents treat a pet's passing. An individual cremation with ashes returned in a proper urn is a common choice, as is a small ceremony with family. When you ask for options, say whether you want a private cremation, whether you would like to attend, and whether you want ashes back.
In a city the size of Vienna, exotic pet cremation is usually findable, but rarely advertised. Most crematories here are built around dogs and cats, and only some have handled a hedgehog, an axolotl or a spider. The fastest route is often through an exotics vet: large cities tend to have at least one practice that sees gliders, reptiles and amphibians, and those vets know which crematory has taken their patients before and treated them well.
Vienna's population is around 1,897,000.
9-12 years[1]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[2]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets
Whatever the local customs around human funerals, cremation for pets has spread steadily, and more providers now accept unusual species than a decade ago. The key questions in Vienna are the same as anywhere: individual or communal, how a very small body is kept separate, and what, if anything, will be returned.
Vienna weather, enclosures and timing
If you don't know how warm or cold your animal room gets, a cheap min-max thermometer tells you more than any forecast. After a loss, write down the reading. It helps your vet judge whether heat or cold played a part, and it protects the animals still in your care in Vienna.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Vienna
Ashes can take longer to come back than keepers expect; one Swedish vet group says two to four weeks is normal[4]. For a very small exotic, the wait is the same as for a large dog, because remains follow the crematorium's schedule, not the pet's size. Ask Vienna providers for a return date and whether a faster return costs extra.

What Austria expects after an exotic pet dies
Some exotic pets carry germs that can pass to people, most famously Salmonella in reptiles and amphibians, which is why the CDC advises washing your hands after every contact. The same care applies after death: wear gloves or wash well after handling the body, and double-bag it if it shares a fridge with food. Local burial and scattering notes for Austria follow.
The first day, step by step
- Make sure your other animals are safe. Fix the heat, cooling or water problem if there was one.
- Wrap your pet in paper towel, then seal it in a bag, which keeps delicate skin, scales or fur from coming loose.
- Call your exotics vet and ask whether they'd recommend a necropsy, especially after an unexplained death in a colony.
- Don't bury or dispose of an amphibian or aquatic pet near water, and don't pour tank water outside.
- Ask two providers for a written quote, giving species, weight and length for a larger animal.
- Arrange delivery or collection, and keep the body cool on the way.
- Let yourself grieve. Caring for an unusual animal takes real knowledge and time, and that loss is real.
Memorials that suit an unusual companion
Most Viennese pet owners live in apartments, from old Altbau buildings with high ceilings and steep stairwells to large municipal housing blocks. If your pet dies at home, think about how they will be carried down, especially a larger animal in a building without a lift. Pet aftercare services in and around Vienna usually collect from your home or your vet. Mention the floor and whether there is a lift when you ask for options.

Questions people ask
What if a crematory in Vienna refuses my species?
It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Austria. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.
What size urn do I need for a hedgehog or sugar glider?
A very small one. Cremated remains usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[3], so a 400 gram hedgehog leaves around a tablespoon and a glider only a few grams. A keepsake urn, locket or small pouch usually fits. Standard pet urns are designed for cats and dogs and will look almost empty.
Can I preserve my pet instead of cremating in Vienna?
Yes. Freeze-drying, taxidermy and resin work are offered in many countries, though often by only a handful of specialists. Freeze your pet promptly in a sealed bag, and don't book a cremation until you've decided, since preservation needs the whole body. Ask any studio for examples of the same species.
My pet died after being bought recently. Should I contact the breeder?
It's worth it. Reputable breeders of gliders, hedgehogs and axolotls often want to know about early deaths, may offer advice on a necropsy and sometimes have health guarantees that require one. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, until you've spoken to them and your vet.
Can I bury my exotic pet in the garden in Vienna?
Rules differ across Europe; some countries allow burial on your own land with conditions such as minimum depth and distance from water. For amphibians and aquatic animals, bury well away from ponds and streams or choose cremation. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you take your pet with you.
Do I need a permit to cremate a protected or CITES-listed pet?
Cremation within your own country usually doesn't need a new permit, but keep your existing permit and any CITES records to hand, because the provider or your permit issuer may ask. Keeping parts, preserving the body or moving remains across a border can involve separate rules. Check with the agency that issued your permit before you act.
